So MS is still a laboratory product

A few interesting excerpts dated December 09, 2012:

Photo by ERIK HOLLADAY Kim Thompson, (left) and Malcolm Fraser Jr. are working to commercialize production of strengthened silk from silkworms implanted with spider genes.

From a small laboratory that opened this year in Innovation Park in South Bend, Ind., Thompson grows transgenic silkworms that will produce millions of eggs for delivery to sericulture facilities — silk farms — that probably will be located in developing countries.

With the oversight of Kraig Biocraft, the silk farms will produce at least hundreds of pounds of the hybrid silkworm/spider silk, which then will be doled out sparingly to potential large-scale purchasers of the fiber....

During the past two years, researchers have made the process more robust by culturing silkworms that grow larger and produce the maximum amount of spider silk possible.

Fraser said the Innovation Park lab in South Bend can provide a starter colony of about 500,000 eggs, but that can serve only as a starting point for a silk farm.

"You are not going to get a whole lot of silk with 500,000 cocoons," Thompson said. A farm would use that amount of eggs as a starter colony for eventual commercial production.

Commercialization should move rapidly in silk farm locations that have an abundance of labor, a climate for the mulberry leaves that silkworms feast on and some knowledge of the industry — a combination that favors developing countries that invite sustainable industries producing a high-value product such as silk.

Several recent questions can be answered from this particular article; including the often stated "what have they been doing for 4 years" (being the article was produced closer to 2013,than early 2012) question.

The article (in part) was deemed controversial because some of the wording was said to be taken out of context.

Only the ones that I could verify as being accurate, were included here....

There is other accurate info to be gleaned but for purposes of your query, i'll leave it at that.

One interesting thing I found is that if one follows this article and then reviews Kim's assertions of "doubling," one could logically estimate what was transpiring....

Even up to the point where Kim mention 30-ish percent survival rate, that increased dramatically to 70+ percent.

I've never claimed to have all the answers but feel i'm beginning to corner the market in questions worthy of them.
