Speaking of sucking, I was waiting off stage when another plebe ahead of me gave a splendid talk on AI [Artificial Intelligence]. As he exited the stage I asked silver tongue if that sh- er, stuff was really working. He told me he had had plenty of time over the years to hone his talk with all the revivals and subsequent decays. It hadn't changed much over 20-30 years.

That was a time when Japan, Inc. was scaring the bejesus out of America with their Fifth Generation Computers that was skipping over the Fourth Generation.

I got to see a demo of a liquid nitrogen-cooled super computer [not a Cray] in Minnesota in February.

February is not the best time to visit Minnesota to talk about cooling with liquid nitrogen.

Yeah we talked a lot there about all kinds of great things just over the horizon but always with the ominous shadow of Japan, Inc. in the background like the Jolly Green Giant is for frozen peas. I don't recall the quantum computer making its appearance like the optical computer but the shadows were mighty dark and the future grim for those left by the wayside.
