BigIron,

I found only one reference on a biker website to butanol:

The American Motorcyclist Association has expressed concern about unanticipated consequences of proposals that might allow gas stations to increase the level of ethanol in the fuel they sell.

Yeah but ethanol ain't no butanol nohow.

In a follow-up comment by Hoop in reply to misinformation from Manfred:

maybe you are referring to butanol? All pure ethanol has the same chemical properties (and problems as a fuel). All alcohols will by hydrophilic to a greater extent than un-diluted hydrocarbon gasoline. That is, alchohols will tend to absorb water rather than phase-separate. Heavier alchohols, like butanol, will be less hydrophilic than ethanol.

See, all us bikers aren't dumber than whale blubber. [I rode an Indian one-lunger way long ago in Vietnam. Today I'm just trying to stay away from wheel chairs.]

For non-biker intelligentsia smile, being less hydrophilic [water-loving] and more energy dense than ethanol is huge. Makes butanol an excellent substitute for gasoline.

One obvious problem is that alchemy is costly but considering the advantages would seem quite bearable.

Best, Terry
