GARDENING UPDATE 05 12 2015

Finally some rest for the weary, particularly me. I'm sitting here typing a message, while a light rain is gradually filling up my rain barrels. Nice to harvest something without even going outside.

SOUTH GARDEN WITH SEEDING TABLE

The April showers did bring the May flowers, as the old adage goes. But the weather is not sustained to warmth. I wake up on some mornings and it's 48*F [8.9*C] ; the temperature then shoots up to 88*F [31.1*C] with winds out of the southwest. Then the wind will shift to northeast and it is decidedly cool again. These bi-polar temperature fluctuations change what I will do and when I will do it for gardening.

The forecast: "Today - Showers early, then partly cloudy for the afternoon. Thunder possible. High 89*F [31.7*C]. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph (16.1 to 32.2 kph). Chance of rain 60%. Tonight - Partly cloudy skies. Low 53*F [11.7*C]. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph (16.1 to 32.2 kph).

Sunrise behind the clouds was at 5:27AM and it will set at 7:56PM.

The bird sanctuary two houses over from me provides an automatic alarm clock around 5AM. It will continually move up to around 4:40AM on the march to the first day of summer in June.

Generally I take a 90 minute afternoon nap and then plant later in the day, so as not to stress my plants [and me] in hotter sun. An evening planting will also help the seedlings to acclimate to a switch from pots to the actual garden soil.

Well, the sun is breaking out of the clouds; my water barrels will not have their thirst clenched frown emoticon I might have to rely on municipal water, but will let it warm up in the barrel over the course of the day. Tepid water is better than ice cold water for new seedlings.

One new neighbor on the next block is putting in a garden and another neighbor who finished law school has resumed gardening. I've already been gifting extra tomato plants to them. Plus my friend, Organic Bob, has harvested my rhubarb plant twice and he gave me a six pack of peppers, three tomato plants and a sweet marjoram herb division of his plant. I believe their will be more community bartering in the future and it is healthy for the environment. For example, dividing a bee attracting herb plant and planting it in another spacious garden will keep the bees happy and the plant will grow better..
