Actually you have it backwards

When you want to buy something do you make a bid on it or ask a price?

When you want to sell something do you ask a price or do you bid?

Bid is where the buyers wait
Ask is where the sellers wait

If you want shares an are not willing to wait you can either raise the bid or you can buy from a seller at the ask.

Most people get this wrong. That is because if you want to sell NOW you need to sell at the bid.

But what you are really doing is finding a buyer.

It is confusing because if you have buy order in at the bid and it fills "someone" sold to you. But actually it doesn't work that way. The MM holds the shares you get sold to you. He got them at a lower price and makes his money on the spread. The share you got were sold to the MM at the ask and bought by you when the bid was raised
