I sent Tom an email about IBM's interest in this area shortly after Lauro started. Tom thanked me, said he was not aware of it, but that it was the kind of thing he wanted George to focus on. At the ASM Tom indeed mentioned "our friends at IBM", so no doubt they followed up on it. However, IBM was inviting interest from any interested parties and had a very structured way to submit requests to them. I think they even had a kit that they would supply to those interested. May still be on their site somewhere.
Bottom line, don't read too much into the "our friends" statement. LWLG has had a lot of friends come and go over the years. It's about $, not friendship.
