NEW IPSWICH — The town may have a use for the long-empty Building No. 2, located behind the town offices.
The building is virtually abandoned, used only for storage and to house the town’s radio equipment. It formerly housed as the town’s police department and Mascenic School District’s SAU office, but was left uninhabitable by an infestation of black mold. The mold has persisted through at least one round of treatment to stamp it out, and recently, the town declined to approve any additional funds to treat it, with warrant articles both to continue mold treatments or destroy the building failing to gain support.
Select Board Chair George Lawrence told the board during its meeting Tuesday that now, Warwick Mills is looking for 4,000 square feet of storage space in New Ipswich, and would like to use Building No. 2 for the purpose.
Lawrence spoke in favor of the proposition, noting that the storage would not require that the building be supplied with heating, cooling or water, and that it would generate some income.
The board has not yet discussed what price they would ask per square foot of rental space.
Selectwoman Becky Doyle questioned the liability aspect for the town in allowing anyone to enter a building known to have a mold issue. Lawrence said that Warwick Mills officials are not overly concerned with the mold issue, as employees will be spending only short amounts of time in the building dropping off or picking up items. Lawrence suggested that with waivers, the town could be protected from liability.
Doyle suggested contacting the town’s lawyer to discuss liability protection before moving forward; the board agreed.
