remind us all who predicted there would be no A72 based products until late 2016/early 2017.......oh wait.......that would be YOU

Well, I give you that one. That is incredible time to market. I guess it is clear that ARM provided the A72 design to Mediatek a long time before its offical announcement, most probably in the form of hard macros. Nevertheless, Mediatek could become a serious competitor for Qualcomm. I doubt their new Krait will perform better than A72, but we'll see.

On the other hand, this is a dual core (4 big.little) tablet chip, so this tells us something about the power consumption of A72. We'll see if it is possible at all to make it a quadcore (8 big.little) design for smartphones at 14nm Samsung or 16nm TSMC.

In any case, Intel should watch that competition closely. That's what they are going against and tick-tock is not the way they're going to win this.
