In 2013 they were so confident that they announced their factory production in 2015 as if it were already accomplished

I don't know if it was a mistranslation, but every PR and news article that I have read about them from 2013 had 2017 at the target commercialization date with 2015 the completion of the pilot facility capable of producing 1 metric ton a month. This was found in a news report dated Feb. 2013 (http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXNASFB2005B_Q3A220C1L01000/). They also state in the article that they will start developing products for practical use in 4 years (2013 + 4 = 2017).

Construction started on the pilot facility back in September 2014 and is scheduled to be complete early this year. This was stated in a PR the same month as the construction (http://news.spiber.jp/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/20140929PR.pdf). They stated in this PR that when construction is complete, they will slowly and gradually ramp up production to ultimately achieve a 20 metric ton per year production rate (1.67 a month). This is consistent with (actually a little higher than) what they stated in the above article.

That PR did not mention any timeline for ramping up, but in an e-mail communication that I have had with them mid last year, they confirmed that in 2017 they would release the specs of their fibers along with samples to interested companies.

As far as the strength of their fibers are concerned, other than the patent information that I cited in a previous post, I don’t have anything else and likely will not until they decide to release the properties of the silk that they have developed.

I do not think that they are a scam because they have been actively hiring many new graduates from the Yamagata Prefectural University of Health Sciences and are still hiring even though they have over 60 employees already. I am sure one of their new hires would have ratted them out by now if they were trying to pull something. They have also been featured many places and have received a LOT of funding as a result of their developments (Here’s a recent video of them talking about and testing their fibers: http://www.nikkei.com/video/860376306002/?playlist=843087678002). I doubt they would have gotten that funding if their fibers were not up to snuff and been able to get this far considering that they already have a complex that takes up multiple building making the stuff. Anything is a possibility, but I really don’t feel that them being a scam is very likely at all.
