I guess all I'm saying is that if you walk down the hallway of any R1 research institution, you'd find a sizeable percentage that would qualify for (and potentially more telling is the fact that they would never apply to) the 999. It's not a catch-all to make Kim semi-omnicient.

This is probably true if a sizable percentage is defined as >=5%.
I myself would also qualify, and would not join.
Back at Bell Labs / Bellcore / Telcordia where I worked I would estimate that 1 in 10 of the Members-of-Technical-Staff (MTS's) would qualify.
1 in a thousand seems like a small number at first glance, but that is out of the entire population.
As you ascend the pyramid from grade school graduates to high school and college and advanced degrees such as MS and PhD and finally to employment as a researcher you concentrate the bright percentage of the population more and more.
However, a larger and larger fraction of that concentrated population consists of individuals on the high end of the Asperger spectrum, individuals who are very very smart, but have some difficulty in interpersonal communication.
I am one such, and I expect that you are also to some extent.
i.e. we are not warm fuzzy "people persons".
Thus to be in the top layer of IQ and also to be a successful trial lawyer is an added distinction.
Never the less, we can clearly see some of the same difficulty in communication in Kim T's behavior.
It is good that he has an IR person and now a new COO to help him.

I think that it is significant that the new COO was given a mediocre direct monetary compensation package, but a nice 2 million in stock options.
Obviously a person with Rice's skills and background could make more money elsewhere, but I would assume that He did his DD and decided that 2 million in stock would likely be the greater part of his compensation.
