If they convert to cover their short positions, why not just convert and sell?

Think about it. If they short and the stock price goes down and they then convert to shares to cover, then that is the SAME THING as converting and selling.

But WORSE.

Because if they short and the price goes up, they lose money on their shorts.

But simply converting and selling books their guaranteed gain, WITHOUT THE RISK.
