Wearing a red prison jumpsuit, former Methodist pastor Arthur "A.B." Schirmer stood before Lebanon County President Judge John Tylwalk Monday morning and entered a no-contest plea to third-degree murder resulting from the death of his first wife, Jewel, in 1999.

Schirmer, 66, will face 20 to 40 years in state prison when he is sentenced via a video conference. Tylwalk did not set a sentencing date.

Schirmer was sentenced in March 2013 and is incarcerated in Greene State Correctional Institute in Waynesburg, Greene County.

Under terms of Schirmer's no-contest plea, Tylwalk will determine the length of the sentence. Maximum penalties for third-degree murder are 40 years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Tylwalk can make the sentence concurrent or consecutive to the life sentence.

During the 10-minute pretrial hearing, Tylwalk explained the three elements to the charge of third-degree criminal homicide to Schirmer: "The first element is that Jewel Schirmer is deceased. ... The second element is that you killed her, you caused her death. ... And the third element is that the killing was caused with malice."

Tylwalk asked Schirmer if he understood the charges.

"Yes, I do," Schirmer said.

Tylwalk told Schirmer that a nolo contendre, or no contest, plea means that "you have no defense or are giving up your defense."

Schirmer said he understood.

As he returned to his seat, Schirmer glanced back briefly to his two daughters and fiancee.

Jewel Schirmer died at Hershey Medical Center on April 24, 1999, a day after sustaining what doctors called a traumatic brain injury. Arthur Schirmer told police he found his wife at the bottom of the basement stairs of their North Cornwall Township home when he came home from jogging.

At the time of Jewel Schirmer's death, the couple lived at 915 Skyline Drive in North Lebanon Township. Arthur Schirmer was a pastor at Bethany United Methodist Church of Lebanon. He was pastor there for 22 years before moving to Reeders, Monroe County, in 2001.

Lebanon County District Attorney David Arnold reopened the investigation into Jewel Schirmer's death after Arthur Schirmer was charged in September 2010 in Monroe County.

Arnold said his offer of third-degree murder was accepted by Schirmer and his defense counsel, Lebanon County Chief Public Defender Brian Deiderick, Sunday night.

"We were relatively firm in what we were comfortable with," Arnold said after the hearing.

Arnold said Jewel Schirmer's brother, John Behney, was present in the court room.

"He's pleased with the results," Arnold said.
