More than half of connected devices will be haptic enabled by 2028, revealing exciting opportunity for immersive video
Company Release - 8/20/2024
New research from Futuresource and InterDigital details how the latest generation of haptic technology is redefining immersive experiences and evolving digital devices
WILMINGTON, Del., Aug. 20, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Haptics, or the sense of touch, is increasingly being incorporated into the connected experience to enhance communications, services, and entertainment, and was spotlighted in a new white paper commissioned by mobile, video and AI technology research and development company InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) and written by market research firm Futuresource. The report reveals how, for the first time, haptics is being considered as a first order media type, alongside audio and video, opening the doors of perception to help consumers not only hear and see their content – but feel it too.
The white paper, Haptics: The Next Modality in Immersive Entertainment, examines the current inflection point in the haptic technology development lifecycle that now has haptics being regarded as an essential element in modern entertainment systems. This shift is attributed to digital devices becoming ever more ubiquitous, and with it, haptic technology has become more accessible to the wider public. From a commercial standpoint, many within the diverse ecosystem of innovators, device makers and content creators have high hopes for haptics: advancements in standards and innovations such as advanced actuators, improved tactile sensors, and more realistic feedback mechanisms are propelling market growth.
The report uncovers:
The addressable market for haptics is growing rapidly: across audio/visual, personal electronics, and wearables, forecasts reveal there will be 4.1 billion haptic-enabled consumer devices in use by the end of 2024
Looking ahead, 53% of consumer devices will be haptic enabled by 2028
Personal electronics drive opportunity. While the smartphone is the natural starting point for haptic use cases, it is expected that greater device variety will characterize the market in the future in areas like gaming consoles, tablets, headphones, smartwatches, and virtual reality (VR) headsets
Extended Reality (XR) is a key market for haptics as the sense of touch heightens the experience of the user. By 2028, worldwide shipments of XR devices are forecasted to increase threefold from today, topping 60 million units
Haptics hardware is improving at a fast pace, with haptic gloves being a noteworthy point of focus. The main use case for this hardware is gaming, which accounts for 75% of the total XR unit shipments
Historically, the absence of standards has stymied progress towards interoperability between platforms and vendors across the haptics ecosystem. This has meant protracted development cycles, proprietary methods, incompatible solutions and low adoption – all factors which the industry seeks to avoid during nascent stages in deployment of new technology. Fortunately, several leading standards organisations, including MPEG, IEEE and Khronos Group, are engaging with industry and collaborating to determine the mechanisms and modalities for coding haptic content and experiences. In fact, the collaborative work within standards is proving to be instrumental in enabling seamless integration across devices and platforms globally.
“This white paper comes at moment when haptic technology is greatly benefitting from advancements in electronics, material science, and consumer demand for immersive experiences,” said Lionel Oisel, VP and Head of Wireless Labs at InterDigital. “We see haptics as the next seismic shift in the way societies interact with technology, providing the opportunity for deeper levels of engagement with content and services through immersive visuals and sensory experiences. Looking ahead, the commercial viability of new services will rely on the standards that are now starting to be defined, and we hope to continue playing a key role in giving shape to this nascent and exciting industry.”

Located at Booth 233, InterDigital and Philips will jointly demonstrate their immersive technologies and contributions to video standards that enable the rendering and delivery of volumetric video experiences. Volumetric video adds the sensation of depth and parallax to traditional content by capturing 3D representations of a real-world object or scenes and translating them into a sequence of frames that can be transmitted across devices. Given the richness of volumetric data, the delivery of this video content requires special compression, and the MPEG Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding (V3C) standard defines the general mechanism for coding and streaming volumetric content.
InterDigital and Philips’ collaboration on V3C immersive codecs empowers the delivery of volumetric content, leveraging InterDigital’s expertise in immersive codecs, including video point cloud compression (V-PCC), haptics, and MPEG immersive video (MIV) extensions, alongside Philips’ expertise in MIV extensions and contributions to critical six degrees of freedom (6DoF) immersive codec and content creation pipelines for 3D rendering.
At AWE, the partners will demonstrate the application of their innovations to deliver live and recorded volumetric video for streamed sport and eSport experiences. InterDigital will showcase contributions to MPEG Immersive Video, Haptics, and Scene Description standards empowering the streaming of volumetric and sensory-enhanced content for recorded eSports gameplay. Philips will demonstrate its video technologies that enable the capture and streaming of volumetric-enhanced live sports content. Together, the partners will spotlight their contributions to the MPEG-I V3C standard and MPEG-DASH platform, which fosters the sensation of real-time telepresence and volumetric realism that can be applied across a diversity of content experiences. The partners’ V3C implementation will soon be included, in “early access mode,” in the 5G-MAG Reference Tools repositories hosted by the 5G-MAG Media Action Group (see here).
“Advancements in video codecs and volumetric streaming technologies unlock new ways of being immersed in video, especially at a time when audiences are enjoying more streamed sports content than ever,” said Lionel Oisel, VP and Head of Video Labs, InterDigital. “The complement of Philips and InterDigital’s volumetric research and innovation empowers the wide scale delivery of crisper, more dynamic immersive content across a variety of devices and use cases.”
“Sports clubs and leagues are seeking new ways to attract viewers and increase fandom. Volumetric sports content that is immersive and interactive places fans in control of how to see the action and will further grow the attractiveness of watching sports on mobile, interactive and immersive devices,” said Jako Eleveld, VP and Head of IP Licensing at Philips. “Together with InterDigital we demonstrate how standards like MPEG V3C work with our multi camera capturing and 6DoF rendering technologies to enable this for the industry.”
InterDigital and Philips will showcase at AWE US at Booth 233 from June 18 - 20. In addition, InterDigital’s Video Solutions Group Senior Director Valerie Allie and Philips Senior Scientist Christiaan Varekamp will deliver a talk on “Empowering Immersive Sports Experiences,” providing an overview of their companies’ contributions to video codecs and volumetric capture technologies that empower the sharing of scalable XR solutions across a variety of platforms, particularly for immersive sports experiences. New Report Pins 6G Success on Novel Benchmarks Extending Beyond Speed, Latency, and Mobility
Company Release - 4/25/2024
Report from InterDigital, written by ABI Research, outlines new and enhanced capabilities of 6G, including integrated sensing and communication, native AI, and ubiquitous connectivity
WILMINGTON, Del., April 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As 5G-Advanced evolves and transitions to 6G, standards and pre-standards bodies have begun to align on the new features and enhanced capabilities that will define the next generation of wireless. A new report commissioned by InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a mobile, video and AI technology research and development company, and written by market research firm ABI Research, introduces the enhancements to 5G capabilities and the novel features of integrated sensing and communication, native AI, and ubiquitous connectivity that will shape 6G, as well as the research and standards roadmap to realizing this 6G impact.
The new report, Driving 5G-Advanced to 6G, argues that if 5G-Advanced is to become the foundation for 6G, then the development of 6G technology and standards must align with the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU’s) IMT-2030 vision framework. The IMT-2030 framework anticipates that 6G will enhance existing 5G and 5G-Advanced mobile network features to support immersive, massive, hyper reliable, and low latency communication and also introduce novel capabilities that reach beyond faster speeds, lower latencies, and higher mobility to support new industrial and enterprise applications.
“The path to each new wireless generation is iterative and evolutionary, and this report reveals the early discussions, critical capabilities, and important milestones guiding the drive from 5G-Advanced to 6G,” said InterDigital EVP and CTO Rajesh Pankaj. “6G will do more than just extend the reach of 5G capabilities, it will also introduce innovative features that empower exciting new applications and experiences in our future.”
Among 6G’s novel capabilities, integrated sensing and communication, native AI, and ubiquitous connectivity represent never before experienced features of our networks that could hold significant potential for consumers and enterprise. Each of these features will be further explored in 3GPP study and working groups.
Integrated Sensing and Communications or ISAC combines current mobile network operations with radar-like sensing capabilities and can be applied for use cases like object detection and tracking, navigation, positioning, and ensuring device trustworthiness.
Native AI, or ubiquitous intelligence, represents a holistic, foundational, and harmonized AI framework that spans all network layers and domains to foster more comprehensive optimizations and new services, like distributed computing and adaptive trust.
Ubiquitous Connectivity reflects seamless, uninterrupted connectivity throughout urban and rural environments, enabled by 6G architecture of combining access technologies like satellite, cellular, and Wi-Fi to create a consistent fabric of connectivity.

As a leader in wireless technology, our engineers have designed and developed a wide range of innovations that are used in wireless products and networks, from the earliest digital cellular systems to 5G and today’s most advanced Wi-Fi technologies. We are also a leader in video processing and video encoding/decoding technology, with a significant AI research effort that intersects with both wireless and video technologies.
