I don't know if there is other news to follow. I really don't think an outright takeover will come but it could. This company quite simply has relationships with everyone in the industry and as such provides a very important middle ground. Many people are interested in having this company around. I don't know if Wink will ever make money or if they can survive long enough to do so. I don't know if the stock is being manipulated, if some secret news is about to occur or if quite simply some people are just glad the company isn't going under and are hoping that a little gamble here might just work out in the long run.
It's been a while since......
I find myself wondering here if it is just the "Moxi" or what, but this whole sector just seemed to wake up. And the real question is who is going to win this battle?

Good post papa
DISH I like that company a lot. I live just south of Denver and most of these communications companies have a shop or two here. RTHM is just a stones throw from my house.
DSL As I see it the demand for DSL just isn't very high. I spend a good deal of time on the net, but most of the people I know don't. I have a DSL line. When I got it installed they told me I was the only person in my neighborhood who wanted it and one of their first customers. I had many problems at first and it took many hours on the phone and four or five trips out here by techs to finally get the thing hooked up reliably. The installation was free and they gave me the modem. Not a very profitable venture if you ask me. Northpoint, I think went belly up because the costs were high and the demand was low and the plan was bad. Check out RCNC better run, better plan still going.
Wireless. All this hype about wireless in the last few years sent companies like Iradium down the tubes. The bottom line here is that VOD has too many customers who use their wireless phones simply for emergencies. The rest of the time the phone sits in a drawer or a glove compartment. Last year in Europe they auctioned off a huge spectrum at an enormous price and now there is talk about the governments giving the money back to help the companies who are now deeply in debt. And along with this expence problem is security problem about parts of the spectrum used by the military. Not that I understand all this but it seems the rollout of the so called 3G network in Europe last year was brought to a standstill over this military issue.
Broadband. As you suggest the problem here is still the last mile. I believe that problem will slowly get solved and that in the mean time we will use various services from different companies. I am following that story trying to figure out how it will be played out. I just find it interesting.
The FED. I don't pretend that I understand how these people work but I would say this if the economy turns around here in the next few qtrs then I think they have done an amazing job. All this doom and gloom, when I graduated from college the unemployment rate was around 15% (1974)so 4.5% looks pretty good to me. In June of 0f 99 at the time of the first rate cut the dow was around 11000, the dow is now at 10951. Just because I'mgonnagetrichfast.com went out of business really doesn't matter to me.
F2 if you get me a teeshirt I'll wear the logo too.
As a matter of fact...
I would love to get rid of my bell service...
I live way out in the country and have a lousey last mile that won't allow a DSL connection...
My phone service has gone out for days at a time and when i depended on dial up that was not good at all...
dont bother complaining they have you by the short hairs...
But... from what i hear the satellite providers like dish network that supply my digital television connection, will soon be proving digital quaility telephony and broadband as part of the package...
When this happens its bye bye bell and hello wireless...
think they know this and thats why they are dragging their feet through the courts to slow things down...
cant blame them for not wanting to compete with 2 cent phone calls but thats the way its going...
its not the bells that are hurting its the companies that depended on their broadband roll out happening a year ago that got the shaft... Covad, Rythms, Northpoint, Westell, and the list goes on and on...
if only they hadnt raised rates so much this might never have happened... time for some new faces on the fed... imho... good luck to you as well... papa
PS-Check out ABC tommorow at 4 and see if F2 Golfer Brian Gay is still in the lead... If you see his caddy look for the F2 logo, its my personal search for the holy grail...lol... papa
Big Telcos are doing fine. Are you going to give up your phone service soon? The Bush boys are trying to help at the FCC and the Legislature is also. I'm just following the story.
Don't know much about golfbags but I do have a set of Ben Hogen Irons from the 1950 which were my Dads. He was a great golfer. Held a record 63 at the local GC in NJ.
Missed the move in WINK but had RCNC and TMWD.
Good Luck
ergo-vdsl will be the killer ap if they can get the money to finance it in this train wreck of a market... And since its all tied in with the big telco's it could be awhile... Hope not but the bells arn't know for their roll out speed... Keep the info flowing I'm learning alot about high priced stocks...
LOL... Papapenny...

EU and MSFT
Microsoft provides a basic operating system as well as proprietary links that permit other hardware and software to interact with it.
In addition, it develops software that operates computers that interact with the television set to receive many of the new products available through the set-top box. But it has not yet started a commercial roll-out.
The other two main operators of interactive television software are Open TV (OPTV) and Liberate (LBRT) .
NTL announced in autumn last year that it would use Microsoft's rival Liberate as the sole supplier of interactive software for set-top boxes.
UPC, which initially planned to use Microsoft TV -the company's interactive TV platform - on set-top boxes, made a very public decision in August 2000 also to use Liberate software after Microsoft failed to deliver its software on time.
Last year, the Commission conducted an investigation into Microsoft's links with British cable operator Telewest (TWT) .
Following that investigation, the U.S. company agreed to reduce its controlling position to a minority interest, the Commission said.
The EU is continuing to investigate Microsoft's tactics in a number of other areas.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 17 (Reuters) - Communications chip maker Conexant Systems Inc. (CNXT) on Tuesday agreed to supply chips to the broadband communications unit of Motorola Inc. NDS's XTV gives operators a value-added platform with which to reach the consumer, incorporating digital reception, content protection through encryption and personalization in one single, secure digital STB. RASP enables ease of access to encrypted content sitting on the STB hard disk by inserting access points in to the encrypted content to allow the PVR to perform certain modes like fast forward and rewind more efficiently and more quickly. XTV extends the broadcast operators opportunity by enabling existing, and new, business models for content stored on the disk in the STB to be exploited.
With revenue a key factor in content provision, it will also offer increased Pay-Per-View and rental models and give viewers a greater choice of valuable content, which will be stored, encrypted, on the STB hard-disk. The development will also enhance the promotion of premium, paid content to the viewer, allowing them to pay when viewing, not when recording.
Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Jas Saini, Vice President Consumer Devices, NDS Group PLC, said "PVR's will dramatically change the way people are entertained. This announcement represents an endorsement by the six leading digital TV semiconductor manufacturers of NDS's superior XTV PVR technology."

Will do.
I think the real sleeper here may be WINK.
They have been signing agreements with everyone because they hold some very important patents. But they are burning money at an alarming rate.
ergo sum-I think we should include all products and services that would not be available without the higher bandwidth provided by the new broadband technologies... Think we should include all companies that will use this technology to fuel their growth... Thanks for the Broadband Picks.... Please keep us informed of any new broadband news you run across... This subject interests me very much. I wonder if someone could define what Braodband actually is. My tendancy is to believe that until the digital standards for HDTV are in place the demand for these services will be limited.
Would you include LBRT, OPTV, WINK,SEAC, AVID,NNDS, LDIG, in this list. Or perhaps cable companies or box maker SFA
Do you consider Broadband to be VOD, VOIP, Digital Radio, HDTV, POTS and High Bandwith Internet coming together?
Noel-I hope AMAT goes up with the rest of the Market...
But I never like to see cutbacks... Hope its just temporary...
What is your opinion on AMAT long term...

AMAT -- Applied Materials, Inc.
Santa Clara, Calif.-Based Chip-Making Equipment Firm to Ask Workers to Leave
Mar 16, 2001 (Austin American-Statesman - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Applied Materials, facing sluggish demand for its chip-making equipment, will ask as many as 1,000 workers to voluntarily leave the company.
The company said Thursday that the offers will be made primarily to employees at its headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., and in Austin. Analysts predicted Austin would receive the most offers, which will include a pay and benefits package.
"They don't want to lose a single one of their Silicon Valley engineers," said analyst Eric Michael Ross of Thomas Weisel Partners in San Francisco. "They're trying to trim back their manufacturing, and that makes Austin the chief target."
Employees will have the right to refuse the offers, spokesman Steve Taylor said. "This is not layoffs. The power is in their hands," he said.
Still, there is no guarantee that layoffs won't occur if too few workers take the offers. The company will wait 45 days to see how many workers quit and to evaluate the economic outlook, Taylor said.
A glut of semiconductors and a slowing economy hashave hurt chip-related companies across the board. Last week, Intel Corp. said it would cut 5,000 jobs after announcing that revenue in the first quarter would be down by about 25 percent from the fourth quarter's $8.7 billion.
Applied, the world's largest maker of chip-making equipment, already has cut more than 500 temporary jobs at its Austin factory this year. The company has about 5,000 permanent and contract workers in Austin, Taylor said.
In addition to cutting contract workers, Applied has frozen hiring, restricted travel and ordered workers to take mandatory days off to cut costs. But "the continued slowdown in demand for semiconductor equipment requires further action by the company," Applied Materials said in a statement.
The company last month beat lowered expectations for its first fiscal quarter, but said orders for chip-making equipment began slowing in mid-January and warned of difficult times to come.
