 New Energy Technologies, Inc., publicly traded under the symbol NENE, is focused on the research, development and eventual commercialization of emerging next-generation alternative and renewable energy technologies. 

New Energy Technologies, Inc.  was incorporated in the State of Nevada on May 5, 1998, under the name “Octillion Corp.” On December 2, 2008, the Company amended its Articles of Incorporation to effect a change of name to New Energy Technologies, Inc.  The Company and its wholly-owned subsidiaries are, Sungen Energy, Inc. (“Sungen”), Kinetic Energy Corporation (“KEC”), Octillion Technologies Limited (“Octillion Technologies”) and New Energy Solar Corporation (“New Energy Solar”).

Development of the SolarWindow™ Technology 

Under terms of the USF Sponsored Research Agreement, the Company has agreed to provide financial support for the project, “Semitransparent Flexible Power Foil (SFPF)” relating to the development of a prototype flexible semi-transparent organic power foil (1ft by 1ft dimension) for use as an energy-generating window glass in building-integrated photovoltaic products (the “USF Technology”). Pursuant to Rule 24b-2 the Company submitted a request for confidential treatment of certain portions of the USF Sponsored Research Agreement, relating to the payment terms, scope of work under the USF Sponsored Research Agreement. The Company’s request was granted on June 11, 2009. Accordingly, these terms of the USF Sponsored Research Agreement have not been disclosed.

 

On May 20, 2009, the Company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, New Energy Solar, also entered into an Option Agreement (the “USF Option Agreement”) with the University of South Florida Research Foundation, Inc., a corporation not

for profit under Chapter 617 Florida Statutes, and a direct support organization of USF, pursuant to which New Energy Solar has the right to an exclusive option to obtain an exclusive worldwide commercial license under certain patents relating to the USF Technology. Pursuant to Rule 24b-2 the Company submitted a request for confidential treatment of certain portions of the USF Option Agreement, relating to the payment terms, scope of work under the USF Option Agreement. The Company’s request was granted on June 11, 2009. Accordingly, these terms of the USF Option Agreement have not been disclosed. 

The USF SolarWindow™ Technology research is conducted in approximately 1,000 square feet of laboratory facilities (University of South Florida, Physics Department, SCA 421, 4202 E. Fowler Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33620-5700) provided by USF under the USF Sponsored Research Agreement. The cost of the facilities is included in the budget under the Company’s Sponsored Research Agreement.


The Company believes that a significant market opportunity exists for its SolarWindow™ Technology, which enables transparent glass windows to generate electricity by coating their glass surfaces with the world’s smallest known solar cells.  Rising energy costs, increasing electricity consumption, and the need for a cleaner alternative to today’s non-renewable energy sources, all contribute to the growing demand for clean, renewable alternative energy sources.

New Energy Unveils SolarWindow™, Able to Generate Electricity on See-thru Glass While Outperforming Rooftop Solar by 300 percent 

See-thru spray-on technology turns ordinary glass surfaces into electricity-generating windows; Performance propels SolarWindow™ towards commercialization. 

Burtonsville, MD & Tampa, FL – September 20, 2010 – New Energy Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: NENE) successfully debuted its proprietary SolarWindow™ technology, capable of transforming everyday surfaces, such as glass, into electricity-generating windows, on September 16 at the University of South Florida (USF) to a standing-room-only crowd of investors, academics, commercial glass companies, and members of the media, including: CNBC, CNN, The Tampa Tribune, The St. Petersburg Times, The Oracle, NBC affiliate WFLA-TV Ch. 8, Bay News 9, WUSF Public Media, and global news service, Agence France Presse.

Company President and CEO, Mr. John A. Conklin, revealed that the application of SolarWindow™ to exterior glass surfaces of commercial towers could generate energy savings several-fold greater than today’s rooftop solar systems during his introduction of New Energy’s  SolarWindow™, the world’s first see-thru, spray-on technology of its kind.

In commercial applications, such as the building facades of office towers, engineers conservatively estimate that installation of New Energy’s SolarWindow™ can generate more than 300% energy savings over conventional rooftop solar systems.  Key to maximizing energy production, SolarWindow™ can be applied to the extensive glass surfaces on commercial skyscrapers, an important advantage over conventional solar systems confined to installation on space-prohibitive rooftops.

By way of example, engineers modeling a 40-story building, similar to Tampa’s landmark “100 North Tampa,” estimate annual cost-savings of $40,000 to $70,000 when installing New Energy’s SolarWindow™ to exposed window facades.  In contrast, mounting today’s popular poly-crystalline silicon modules on the rooftop produces only $20,000 in energy savings per year.

The Company expects to publish comprehensive performance data in upcoming weeks, following independent, third-party measurement and engineering validation.

SolarWindow™: Early Performance Prompts Commercialization Efforts

Researchers at the debut event shared early technical hurdles and subsequent achievements which enabled advancement from concept to working prototype, further explaining that efforts are now focused on product development for commercialization of New Energy’s see-thru SolarWindow™.

SolarWindow™ is made possible by spraying an electricity-generating coating on to glass at room temperature– an important attribute highlighted by researchers.  Scientists also demonstrated numerous features of New Energy’s SolarWindow™, including its ability to remain see-thru while generating electricity.  Unique to SolarWindow™, both natural and artificial light were used in demonstrations to generate electricity. 

Following Mr. Conklin’s introduction, scientists powered lights on a scale-model house by exposing New Energy’s see-thru SolarWindow™ to artificial light from fluorescent lamps, mimicking lighting typically installed inside offices.  In artificial light, SolarWindow™ technology outperforms today’s commercial solar and thin-films by as much as 10-fold under low-intensity irradiance.

Researchers then repeatedly opened and closed the boardroom’s window shades, successfully powering LED lights each time SolarWindow™ was exposed to natural light.  This demonstration mimicked outdoor exposure such as sunlight on the exterior façade of commercial buildings – New Energy’s initial target market and a promising early application of its technology. 

Importantly, scientists at the event not only demonstrated the ability to generate ‘voltage’ to power lighting, but also revealed SolarWindow’s capacity to produce ‘current’ necessary for powering mechanical devices and appliances. 

Following a boardroom display of LED lights powered by SolarWindow™ using both natural sunlight and artificial fluorescent light sources, attendees crowded inside inventor and Lead Researcher Dr. Xiaomei Jiang’s laboratory where PhD-candidate and Researcher Jason Lewis, successfully powered the mechanical rotor blades of a small helicopter using only a single, small-scale SolarWindow™ prototype.

New Energy’s working SolarWindow™ prototype is a precursor to the development of a commercial scale prototype and eventual full-scale production.  Low production costs, improved manufacturability and increased power performance are among important, recently announced objectives researchers are now targeting.  Key to these advances are the development of new methods and technologies for applying New Energy’s electricity-generating coatings to glass surfaces.

  
Electrical power is generated on glass when New Energy’s SolarWindow™ coatings are sprayed onto surfaces using commercially available equipment. This patent-pending process enables researchers to spray SolarWindow™ coatings onto glass at room temperature, eliminating expensive and often cumbersome high-temperature or high-vacuum production methods typically used by current solar manufacturers.

(OTCBB: NENE) announced today that Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), a leading American certification and testing laboratory for solar products and equipment, has validated the Company’s power production modeling calculations for its novel, SolarWindow™ technology.

SolarWindow™ is the first-of-its-kind see-thru glass window capable of generating electricity, and able to outperform conventional rooftop solar module installations by more than 300% when applied to the facades of commercial tall buildings and skyscrapers.

FSEC engineers reviewed numerous variables associated with the design basis and guidelines used in New Energy’s SolarWindow™ electrical power and financial model calculations, including:

  • Building Area and Height - These variables account for the structure’s length and width, and allow for modeling of the number of building stories and calculation of “total viewable window surface area”;
  • Number of Building Sides Available - This allows for calculation of SolarWindow™ power output based on various window exposure configurations;
  • Peak Sun Hours - The number of hours required for a day’s total solar irradiation to accumulate at peak sun condition (PSH/day);
  • Annual Building Energy Demand – The amount of energy required to power a building (kWHr/Yr);
  • Roof Area – This calculation allows for comparison of SolarWindow™ against rooftop solar installations, and considers an “open array arrangement” for such systems; and
  • Solar Offset Desired (Solar Fraction) - The percentage of a building's energy requirements that can be met (satisfied) by a solar energy system. A Solar Offset of 100% means the entire building energy requirement is satisfied by the renewable energy system.

Following their review, FSEC engineers concluded that calculations in New Energy’s SolarWindow™ power output calculations model are “…reasonable and free of any significant errors.”

Dr. Hegedus is a Research Scientist at the Institute of Energy Conversion (IEC) at the University of Delaware (UD), the world’s oldest photovoltaic research laboratory.

 

Dr. Hegedus is credited with more than 90 scientific publications related to thin film solar cell fabrication, characterization, manufacturing methods and reliability studies, and has played an active role in the development of numerous solar cell technologies, which have subsequently been commercialized.

Important to the ongoing development of SolarWindow™, Dr. Hegedus has specific expertise related to optical enhancement, textured transparent conducive oxides (TCO), thin film device analysis and characterization, heterojunctions, and stability under accelerated degradation conditions.

Dr. Hegedus also serves as Principal Investigator of industry-funded programs targeting improved power output of solar cells through chemical processes. Working through commercial partnerships, Dr. Steven S. Hegedus has developed technologies to help characterize the stability of organic photovoltaic modules under varying environmental conditions, an important hurdle in ensuring long-term performance. He is the co-editor of the Handbook of Photovoltaic Science and Engineering.

Dr. Hegedus received a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1977, a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UD.

Mr. Jerry Lynch, P.E. is the principle engineer at Sigma Design Company located in Springfield New Jersey, and is currently serving as Lead Engineer in the development of New Energy’s MotionPower™-Express technology for generating electricity from the motion of cars and light trucks. Mr. Lynch is credited with developing early prototypes of the MotionPower™ system, and has worked to achieve significant performance and durability milestones.

 

Mr. Lynch has 25+ years of experience creating innovative designs, implementing process improvement and solving business problems. As a senior level manager, he has been responsible for all phases of new product development. He has significant experience in technology acquisitions and has assisted in launching 6 new manufacturing business ventures. He has been responsible for the design and successful launches of 100’s of innovative technical new products. Mr. Lynch has significant international experience on major projects in Abu Dhabi, UAE, France, The Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Spain. Over the past 7 years he has personally been involved in four pilot projects in the renewable energy sector, specifically in solar and hydrokinetic power generation.

Mr. Lynch is a licensed professional engineer in NY and NJ, and has authored numerous articles on design and industrial manufacturing. Jerry has been certified by NIST as a LEAN Manufacturing Expert and has helped over 20 firms develop smart manufacturing methods and approaches. He holds 4 US patents with two patents pending. He is a member of the American Filtration & Separation Society and served as the AFS National Chairman 2006-2007, other affiliations include Society of Manufacturing Engineers, ASME, and SNAME. Mr. Lynch serves on the Middlesex College Engineering Advisory Board and is on the Technical Advisory Board of “Filtration News”, an industrial trade magazine.

Mr. Lynch has a BS in Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, a MS in Business Management from Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ.

Mr. Lynch is the Lead Research and Development Engineer of the Company’s MotionPower™-Express system, designed for roadway installations where vehicles are required to decelerate or stop, and in the process, assists vehicles in slowing down. MotionPower™ captures the slowing vehicle’s motion (kinetic) energy before it is lost as brake heat and friction, and creatively converts this energy into ‘clean’, green electricity.

New Energy Announces Appointment of Award-Winning Physicist and SolarWindow™ Lead Researcher 

 

Columbia, MD – February 10, 2011- New Energy Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: NENE), a developer of next-generation alternative and renewable energy technologies, today announced that it  bolstered the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board with the appointment of Dr. Z. Valy Vardeny, one of the world’s foremost experimental physicists, and Dr. Xiaomei Jiang, Lead Researcher of New Energy’s SolarWindow™ technology, capable of generating electricity on see-thru glass.

Today’s announcement follows last week’s debut of New Energy’s largest-ever SolarWindow™ of its kind. Working under the auspices of Dr. Xiaomei Jiang, New Energy successfully developed a one-foot by one-foot (144 square inches) first-generation working prototype of the Company’s SolarWindow™.

New Energy’s latest, large-area prototype is 300% larger in its axis dimension and 900% larger in surface area as compared to its four-inch by four-inch predecessor, unveiled in September 2010.

The prospect of generating electricity on glass windows is made possible through the use of special compounds which help conduct electricity on SolarWindow™, yet remain see-thru. In contrast, conventional materials for conducting electricity make use of metals which can block visibility and inhibit transparency.

Electricity is generated on SolarWindow™ by spraying see-thru, electricity-generating coatings onto glass surfaces. These compounds and coatings make use of organic chemicals classified as polymers and fullerenes – Dr. Vardeny’s specific area of expertise.

Dr. Vardeny’s research interests include technologies particularly important to helping improve efficiency, electrical power output, and the performance and design of the solar arrays used in New Energy’s SolarWindow™.

 

Specifically, his focus on optical, electrical and magnetic properties of organic semiconductors addresses the movement of electrons, as occurs in SolarWindow™. This ‘flow’ of electrons (negatively charged particles) is fundamental to generating electric ‘current’, necessary for powering appliances and fixtures.

The performance of SolarWindow™ is also reliant upon the behavior and structure of compounds which help promote the transportation of electrons, necessary for generating electricity. These compounds, called fullerenes, organic semiconductors, and nanotubes, are also areas of specific research study for Dr. Vardeny.

Dr. Z. Valy Vardeny is one of the world’s foremost experimental physicists, and is routinely invited to speak at important scientific conferences all over the world, including the Nobel Symposium on "Conducting Polymers" as well as the symposium for the 2000 Nobel Prize Award in Chemistry.

A prolific author, he is credited with publication of 490 peer-reviewed papers in some of the most prestigious publications in the world, including the Physical Review Letters, considered by many to be the most prominent journal in physics, in which his writing has appeared 50 times. He also served as Regional Editor of the Physical Review, a respected American science journal.

Dr. Vardeny currently serves as a Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Utah; a fellow of the American Physical Society (1996); is Editor of both Nature Communication, and Journal of Synthetic Metals; and is consultant to major corporations. He also holds a dozen provisional and issued patents.

Dr. Z. Valy Vardeny earned his B.S. and PhD in Physics from the Technion, Haifa, Israel. He received the Yigal Alon National Award in 1982; the University of Utah Research award in 1996; the Willard Award of Art and Science in 1997; the Lady Davis Professorship at the Technion in 2000, in 2005 and again in 2009; the Utah Governor’s Medal of Science and Technology in 2005; the 2008 Frank Isakson APS Prize for Optical Effects in Solids; and the Rosenblatt Award for Excellence at the University of Utah, the university’s highest honor.

Dr. Xiaomei Jiang currently serves as Lead Researcher in the ongoing development of New Energy’s SolarWindow™ technology, and is credited with several important technical breakthroughs for achieving transparency on glass while generating electricity.

 

Under her auspices, researchers developing the Company’s SolarWindow™ technology have surpassed numerous technical milestones, which include the ability to ‘spray’ New Energy’s electricity-generating coating onto glass surfaces at room temperature, unlike conventional solar manufacturing which may require expensive and cumbersome pressure-sensitive and temperature-specific environments.

Earlier this year, Dr. Jiang’s team developed new compounds for use in SolarWindow™. Researchers anticipate that successful integration of these compounds could improve efficiency, lower production costs and enhance future commercial manufacturability of SolarWindow™ -- all important to the eventual commercial deployment of SolarWindow™. Equally important to commercialization is the ability to scale-up SolarWindow™.

Dr. Jiang successfully led the early scale-up of SolarWindow™ from only one-quarter the size of a grain of rice to a working prototype of one-inch square. She subsequently oversaw scale-up to a four-inch square working prototype, debuted in September 2010 to national media, scientists, and commercial attendees.

Last week, under Dr. Xiaomei Jiang’s leadership, scientists successfully prototyped the Company’s first-ever one-foot by one-foot SolarWindow™, an important milestone in the development of a large-scale commercial product.

Dr. Xiaomei Jiang currently is an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of South Florida. Dr. Jiang received her B.S from Sichuan University in southwest China in 1987, and M.S in theoretical condensed matters physics from the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science in 1990. In 2004, Dr. Jiang received her Ph.D in experimental condensed matters physics from the University of Utah. Dr. Jiang completed two years of postdoctoral work from 2004 to 2006 at the University of Texas at Dallas. She has served as Assistant Professor at Physics Department of University of South Florida since August 2006.
