Coastal Integrated Services Inc. The Lids

A stroke of genius resulting from a frustrating, flimsy coffee lid at an Orange County convenience store in the 1980s led to the development of Simply Lids. U.S. Cups and Lids Market

Demand in the cups and lids segment of the U.S. market is forecast to hit $10 billion in 2018, according to a Freedonia report at Demand is driven by the role of beverages as revenue generators in the restaurant business, as well as changing consumer trends away from carbonated soft drinks and toward specialty beverages.

The same report shows that while drinking cups will continue to dominate the market, the fastest gains are in the packaging cup segment due to convenience, portability and portion control. Within this segment, environmentally friendly products take the winning lead. Recyclable paper cups and plastic cups are overtaking foam cups due to environmental concerns.

Lid demand, however, will outpace cup demand due to rapidly growing food and beverage sales from carry-out and retail stores and beverages purchased for offside consumption; rising demand for specialty lids; and increases for single serving packaging cups, which typically have some type of lid or flexible lidding.

The broader foodservice market represented 67% of demand in 2013 and is projected to remain the largest cup and lid market. Key drivers in this market are specialty beverage offerings in quick-service and restaurants; the growing presence of fountain drink dispensers; consumption trends for products commonly packaged in cups, such as yogurt, snack foods, coffee and tea in single-cup brewing systems.
