INFINITE R ABSORBS HEAT DURING THE DAY AND RELEASES IT AT NIGHT
Infinite R will change the fundamental thinking about existing insulation methods. Due to its Phase change properties in which it transforms from a solid below 82 degrees to a liquid above 82 degrees it removes the heat load from the inner insulation barrier. While going thru the Phase change it absorbs heat but does not increase in temperature! There is ZERO heat load applied to the inner insulation envelope of the building. As the outside temperature decreases below 82 degrees Infinite R begins to release the stored heat to outside effectively maintaining a balanced inside temperature for the occupants.
While all this speaks to the comfort of the occupants there is a much larger benefit. Since there was no heat load on the building the AC system did not have to respond to the heat load saving countless dollars in energy bills. The best part is once it is installed it will continue to save the owners on their power bills for the life of the home. It will reduce the energy bills up to 30% or more forever.
Claims are that the Infinite R under development could save up to 20 percent of house space-conditioning costs. A computer model of the laboratory tests of the attic INFINITE R insulation showed that it reduced the total heat flow by 22 percent and the peak heat flow was 42 percent lower than an equal thickness of fiberglass insulation. It reduced the air conditioning load by 40 percent and shifted the peak load up to eight hours, depending on climate. Infinite R insulation is most effective in climates that have sharp variations between day and night temperatures. Adopted in sufficient quantities, the technology could result in reductions of peak-hour energy use that make unnecessary the use of expensive utility peak-hour shaving power plants and defer the construction of additional power plants to meet peak energy demands.
A private company with the help of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed a building envelope application. It has tested an attic insulation that absorbs daytime heat, releasing it at night. The Infinite R changes phases from solid to liquid at 82°F, absorbing heat from the hot attic during the day, before it can penetrate the home. When attic temperatures cool at night, the Infinite R solidifies and releases heat back into the attic, moderating outdoor temperatures.
Infinite R collects thermal energy from its environment and stores it until it reaches its "saturation point" or until the ambient temp drops below the phase change temp. In our case, our basic material has a phase change at 81 degrees F. So any temps above that number would be stored in the material and when the ambient drops below that temp (at night) the heat would be released by Infinite R. This would of course flatten out (modulate) the highest temps of the day (while the Infinite R is absorbing the heat unlike most other materials, it doesn't change temperature itself!) and perhaps more importantly, it would push forward 4-8 hrs the actual "Peak use period" for power companies. This of course would help to control customer energy costs as many utilities charge more for peak period use, and help prevent brown and blackouts by removing our customers' peak period from the load!
