Oh, they either already have mastering capability or contracts with others to master their films.

Consider that most movie theater projectors these days are digital. They don't send reels of film to the theaters any more, at least not normally. So those first-run movies you see were digitized by someone, likely the studio itself, so they can maintain control.

And any movie that's on Blu-Ray was already mastered, and they wouldn't have simply mastered it at 1080p if the tech was available to go higher, because it's a pain to keep redoing it. They'd have mastered it at the highest resolution available, and even 10 years ago, that would likely be well in excess of 16K.

If there is much money to be made with 4K conversion what's to stop anybody from buying/leasing 10 machines and running them 24/7. He'll any big studio could easily afford to purchase dozens of these machines and do it themselves. Nothing special or proprietary here.
