Good point. Fiber optics can carry data. But currently (sorry)- only copper can carry electric power- whether from coal, Nat gas, oil solar, wind or nuclear.
Excellent post...Also all of those in the middle of nowhere wind, solar, and wave "farms" need connections to a power grid (The US's needing an upgrade). A previous post here about Russia supplying Nuclear power plants to South Africa shows that not just China, but the whole world is expanding their power capacity; copper is its conduit and russian controlled uranium is often its source.
