Magnegas- MNGA is an alternative energy company that creates a system that produces hydrogen-based fuel through the gasification of liquid and liquid waste.. This stock closed up 4.7% to $1.54 in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Range: $1.49-$1.69
52-Week Range: $0.40-$2.45
Thursday's Volume: 4.88 million
Three-Month Average Volume: 2.64 million

From a technical perspective, MNGA bounced higher here right off some near-term support at $1.40 with strong upside volume. This stock recently sold off from its 52-week high of $2.45 to $1.40. Following that move, shares of MNGA have started to bounce off that $1.40 low and it's quickly pushing within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if MNGA manages to take out Thursday's high of $1.69 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $1.82 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MNGA as long as it's trending above near-term support at $1.40 or at $1.20 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 2.64 million shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then MNGA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.40 to its 52-week high at $2.45.

Cinco de Mayo - May 5, 1862:
Cinco de Mayo

The celebration of Cinco de Mayo marks the extraordinary victory of about 4000 Mexican patriots over several battalions of French troops on May 5, 1862. The French force, which possibly outnumbered the Mexicans by a margin of 2:1, were soundly defeated in this battle due to the strategy of the Mexican leader, General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Seguin used everything at his disposal to beat the French, including Native American Indians from central Mexico and a local herd of cattle stampeded into the core of advancing French troops.

Unfortunately, it was a short- lived victory. France sent reinforcements, battled their way to Mexico City, and eventually conquered the nation a year later.

The question which is usually raised at this point of the narrative is why the French Army was even in Mexico in 1862. Ostensibly, they were sent to collect a debt.

The story begins with Mexican indebtedness to France, Great Britain, and Spain after securing loans to mitigate the government’s near bankrupt status as a result of the Mexican Civil War of 1858 and the internal Reform Wars between liberal and conservative political factions.

The period known as “La Reforma” ended with the liberals taking control in 1860 with the intent to create a more modern Mexican civil society with a capitalist economy using the United States as a model.

In March of 1861, Benito Juárez, the first Native American to be elected president of Mexico, was provided a four-year term under the Constitution of 1857. Unfortunately, as he took the reigns of government he discovered the real economic circumstances of a destitute treasury.

By July 17, 1861, Juarez issued a moratorium aimed at suspending all foreign debt payments for two years. It was not a good move. France, Great Britain, and Spain all sent warships into the Gulf of Mexico and jointly seized the custom house in the port city of Veracruz in December of 1861.

The obvious intent of the troika was to stay until they collected on their respective outstanding loans. Britain and Spain simply renegotiated the debt with the Juarez administration and the troops got in their ships and sailed back to Europe. But, the French did not. France left their ships parked in the Gulf of Mexico and left their troops on alert. Their intent was not initially obvious, but Napoleon III, the French emperor, had cleverly decided to utilize the crisis to establish a French empire in Mexico. The emperor had sent Maximilian von Habsburg, a younger brother of the Emperor of Austria, to become the new emperor of Mexico.

Marching from Veracruz towards Mexico City, the first major battle occurred near the little village of Puebla. It was there on May 5, 1862 the powerful French battalions with 8,000 troops encountered heavy resistance from a Mexican band which numbered about 4,000 consisting of Mexican cavalry, troops, and Zapotec and Mixtec Indians as well as a herd of cattle that the Mexicans stampeded into the oncoming French footsoldiers. This victory surprised the French and galvanized the Mexican resolve to fight for their freedom.

Unfortunately, it was simply a temporary setback for the French forces.

In 1863 with 30,000 troops, the French forced the Juarez government to flee north and ultimately to the city of El Paso del Norte, which is now know as Ciudad Juárez. Here is where he established his government in exile. In July of 1863, the French took over Mexico City. On April 20, 1864, the French installed Maximilian as Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and essentially made Mexico a French colony. The United States could not do anything because our country had splintered and the nation was in the midst of the Civil War.

One of the fears of the Lincoln administration was that the French were in a great position to aid the Confederacy, which some historians believe was one possible effect of the French colony. Jefferson Davis had appealed to the British and French to assist the Southern cause in the “Second Revolution” against the tyrannical Federal administration under Lincoln. Because of the victory at Puebla, it delayed French attempts to assist the Confederates for one full year.

During the French-Mexican War, a poorly supplied and outnumbered Mexican army under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeats a French army attempting to capture Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico. Victory at the Battle of Puebla represented a great moral victory for the Mexican government, symbolizing the country's ability to defend its sovereignty against threat by a powerful foreign nation.

In 1861, the liberal Mexican Benito Juarez became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew, but France, ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and driving President Juarez and his government into retreat.

Certain that French victory would come swiftly in Mexico, 6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles. From his new headquarters in the north, Juarez rounded up a rag-tag force of loyal men and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texas-born General Zaragoza, the 2,000 Mexicans fortified the town and prepared for the French assault. On the fifth of May, 1862, Lorencez drew his army, well-provisioned and supported by heavy artillery, before the city of Puebla and began their assault from the north. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers to the fewer than 100 Mexicans killed.

Although not a major strategic victory in the overall war against the French, Zaragoza's victory at Puebla tightened Mexican resistance, and six years later France withdrew. The same year, Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, who had been installed as emperor of Mexico by Napoleon in 1864, was captured and executed by Juarez' forces. Puebla de Los Angeles, the site of Zaragoza's historic victory, was renamed Puebla de Zaragoza in honor of the general. Today, Mexicans celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla as Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday in Mexico.

USA The Starters

http://www.cbssports.com/world-cup/eye-on-world-cup/24584612/your-guide-to-the-us-mens-national-team-meet-the-team

Tim Howard: At 35, he's one of six veterans from South Africa, and his performance, perhaps more so than any other single player, could determine the U.S.'s chances of advancing to the knockout stages. Howard recently earned his 100th international CAP, and his 54 wins are the most of any U.S. keeper in history. In 38 Premier League games this season for Everton, he recorded 15 clean sheets, and it's got to be reassuring that Klinsmann consistently refers to him as one of the top-5 goalies in the world.

DaMarcus Beasley: The wiry defender has stabilized the backline in qualifying. Barring unforeseen circumstances, Beasley will become the first American to play in four World Cups -- he also has 117 CAPs and 17 goals to his name. Beasley has been playing with Liga MX club Puebla in Mexico but he was recently put on their transfer list, meaning that he's essentially going to be auditioning for teams in Brazil. The rangy defender has been known to impact games by sneaking up the left blank and contributing on offense.

Matt Besler: Beslerwill be making his first World Cup appearance despite only debuting with the national team last year. The heady central defender plays his club soccer for Sporting Kansas City, where he was named the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year. He isn't particularly big for a central back (6-foot, 170-pounds), but he's shouldered a ton of responsibility in shoring up the U.S. defense since joining the squad last year. Chemistry and experience are the two question marks here.

Geoff Cameron: It's not clear where Cameron's best position is -- right back, central defender, defensive midfielder -- but it's patently obvious that he's one of the U.S.'s most reliable players. Klinsmann has chosen to deploy him at central back, a position in dire need of stability and size, attributes the Premier League's Stoke City mainstay can provide. Klinsmann undoubtedly appreciates that Cameron has faced elite competition with his club, and thus won't be intimidated by Group G's strikers.

Fabian Johnson: The man tasked with directly stopping Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabian Johnson should be the starting right back for the U.S. Like Cameron, he's shown immense versatility, both in tackling and on offense. You may remember his goal against Turkey? He's one of five German dual nationals and one of two expected to start. In reality, the number of Germans has little to do with Klinsmann's soccer lore, but it's actually a product of the U.S. military, which has thousands of troops stationed in central Europe. “Four [of the five] were born in Germany to American fathers in the military,” according to Business Insider. The lone standout is Julian Green.

Jermaine Jones: Clearly one of Klinsmann's favorite players, Jones is the other of the aforementioned German nationals expected to start. As a defensive midfielder, Jones plays with reckless abandon for his body, which also sometimes leaves him vulnerable to cards. After switching his national allegiances from Germany to the U.S. in 2009, Jones has embraced his new team. As such, he inked a giant American-themed tattoo on his left kneecap to celebrate his patriotism. “I am proud to be half-half, proud to be half-American, half-German and to play proudly for the U.S. national team.”

Michael Bradley: Frankly, the U.S. will go as far as Bradley carries them. He's vital on defense, but it's his vision as the team's point guard that propels the offense. Bradley used to hear charges that he was only on the national team because of his father, but that's long been dispelled. As integral as he is, Klinsmann was reportedly displeased when he transferred from Serie A Roma to the MLS's Toronto FC this past January for a hefty contract increase.

Kyle Beckerman: If you're blinded by Bradley's shiny dome, you can find reprieve in the 32-year-old workhorse's dread-locked head of hair. An MLS-lifer and current captain of Real Salt Lake, Beckerman isn't particularly athletic but he has good size, put in his years and gained respect around the U.S., eventually earning him a call-up to the national team. He's also made seven-straight MLS All-Star games.

Alejandro Bedoya: The gritty left midfielder was invited to the U.S. 30-man camp ahead of South Africa in 2010, but ultimately didn't make the cut. Bedoya hopped around Europe for the past few years before settling with French first division club Nantes, a move designed at improving his maturity and skill. The move, not without its share of obstacles, made Klinsmann take notice. “The fact that he went there in the first place, he stepped it up and became more mature,” Klinsmann said.

Clint Dempsey: The team captain is a seven-year veteran of the Premier League (Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur), and his 57 league goals are an American record. The U.S. desperately needs scoring against the firepower of Group G, but as evident in the team's send-off match vs. Nigeria, he might be best served as an attacking midfielder who can create on counter-attacks. Dempsey made the seismic transfer to the MLS last August, and established himself as the star on Seattle's team with eight goals in nine games thus far this season.

Jozy Altidore: With Dempsey in the midfield, the U.S.'s primary scoring threat will be Altidore, who at just 24, has 70 CAPs and 23 goals for the U.S (sixth all-time). Perhaps you'd heard the long-running narrative that Altidore was mired in a goal-less streak dating back to December, both for club (Sunderland) and country. Well after just two Premier League goals, Altidore found his form with two (necessary, even though he won't admit it) goals against Nigeria last week.

The Subs

Aron Johannsson: The lone Icelandic-American has a penchant for scoring goals – 17 with Holland's AZ Alkmaar this past season – and he could be an extremely valuable offensive burst off the bench.

Chris Wondolowski: An MLS veteran, Wondolowski has netted nine goals for the U.S. national team in the past year and nearly scored two more in the team's send-off series vs. Azerbaijan.

Graham Zusi: Another Sporting Kansas City star, Zusi is a crafty winger whose placement off set pieces is often flawless. He could conceivably spell Beckerman or Bedoya off the bench, or even start over either one of them.

Mix Diskerud: The Norwegian-American will wear the famed No. 10 jersey in his first World Cup. A deft, quirky midfielder, all it takes is one or two touches for Diskerud to impact a play. He's also the team's resident ping pong star.

Brad Davis: Perhaps it was Davis' inclusion that bumped Donovan off the roster, but the left-footed midfielder could more than enhance his profile with his lockdown defense and unparalleled corner kicks.

Julian Green: Now just 19, it would be a surprise if the Bayern Munich product saw the pitch at the World Cup. But Klinsmann believes in him, a credit that could pay off in the 2018 World Cup.

Omar Gonzalez: Gonzalez, a defender for the LA Galaxy (he won MLS defender of the year in 2011), appears to be the odd-man-out in the central defense. The spot was once considered his to lose, but shaky passing and a knee injury gave way to Cameron in the back. An injury or a defensive shift could be his only means onto the field.

John Brooks: The 21-year-old German-American is another central defender who isn't likely to see the field in Brazil. With only four CAPs to his name, Brooks' selection was a bit surprising.

Timmy Chandler: Like Brooks, Chandler is another young defender making his mark in the Bundesliga. He saw action in the send-off series, but was caught out of place a few too many times for him to realistically supplant one of the more senior defenders.

DeAndre Yedlin: The Seattle Sounders' bulky, 20-year-old defender isn't likely to see time, but should they need an extra defender, his speed is probably his best asset.

Brad Guzan: The U.S. is fortunate to have Guzan, a top-flight keeper at Aston Villa, as their backup. One never knows with goalies and injuries, but Guzan's time may be in 2018.

Nick Rimando: Not many teams have the luxury of having a third-string keeper with more than 100 regular season (MLS) shutouts to his name.

Aug. 11-13 Perseids meteor shower and a super moon

August 10 brings both the start of the "Old Faithful" of meteor showers, the Perseids and a super moon.

Check out this story on USATODAY.com: http://usat.ly/1sd7UWS

SAN FRANCISCO – Aug. 10 brings the start of the "Old Faithful" of meteor showers, the Perseids, as well as a super moon.

The prolific Perseids show up once a year, in August, filling the night sky with as many as 80 shooting stars an hour. This year's show coincides with the arrival of a super moon, which occurs when the Earth and moon are at their closest.

Super moons bring with them 30% more light. That's a problem as it makes the meteors less visible.

Still, the two events together make this a good few days to spend some time outside at night, says Ben Burress, an astronomer with the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland.

The shower's peak will come in the hours before dawn Aug. 11-13 , Burress says.

Look in the constellation Perseus, which is just to the left of the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters constellation, in the northeastern portion of the sky.

Normally, a bright moon would dim the visibility of meteors, but the Perseids have bright meteors, so "it's not a complete washout," Burress says. "But it won't be nearly as good as it would if the moon wasn't up."

Another option is to look as night falls, when the moon is low in the east, according to Alan MacRobert, senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine.

If you're lucky, you might see some Earth-grazing Perseids. These are unusually long and graceful meteors, less frequent but quite lovely.

This year's Perseid shower won't be the wild, showy 80 meteors per hour that can happen when they arrive during moonless nights. Even so, a shooting star or two reminds us that looking heavenward is always rewarding.

And if you don't see a meteor, you'll still get to see a super moon.

Astronomers call these "perigee full moons," though in the past few years, they've taken on the popular name "super moons," according to EarthSky.com.

Super moons occur when a full moon and the Earth are closest in their orbits.

The moon will be 190,000 miles from the Earth, 20% closer than its farthest point, when it is 240,000 miles away.

"That means it's maybe 10% to 15% larger on average than a full moon and about 30% brighter," Burress says.

The moon's closeness isn't just something to look up for. It also brings extra high and low tides, which make it a great time for beachcombing.

COACHES POLL: Full top 25 rankings

1. Florida State: Beginning the season where they ended after claiming the final BCS title, the Seminoles expect to be at or near the top throughout 2014. Reigning Heisman winner Jameis Winston will have some less-experienced pass catchers, but the long game isn't likely to miss a beat with Rashad Greene and Levonte Whitfield. TE Nick O'Leary also is back, and senior Karlos Williams will pace a deep TB corps. Look for DE Mario Edwards, CB P.J. Williams and S Jalen Ramsey to emerge quickly as the Seminoles'' next wave of defensive stars.

USATODAY

Florida State picked No. 1 in preseason Amway Coaches Poll

2. Alabama: The, well, process of replacing a number of key players, more than a few of whom moved on to the NFL, never takes long for Nick Saban. The sound foundation of the offense is a powerful front line that will pave the way for flashy TBs T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry. Incoming Florida State transfer Jacob Coker is the perceived favorite to earn the starting QB job, and having veteran WR Amari Cooper in the huddle will help. LB Trey DePriest and S Landon Collins will likely emerge as leaders for a talented but youthful defense.

USATODAY

Alabama predicted to win SEC and dominate All-SEC teams

3. Oklahoma: QB Trevor Knight, whose stellar outing in the Sugar Bowl victory against Alabama, is back to lead the attack. He'll be throwing to WR Sterling Shepard and QB-turned-TE Blake Bell. Touted freshman TB Joe Mixon's career hit a speed bump before he ever took the field with an assault allegation, but Keith Ford was and is likely to be the main man in the backfield regardless. It's the defense, specially the front seven, that really has OU faithful thinking championship. DEs Charles Tapper and Geneo Grissom and LBs Eric Striker and Frank Shannon will make life extremely difficult for opposing QBs.

FOOTBALL FOUR: Rating and debating college football

4. Oregon: The Ducks have a signature star on both sides of the ball as they look to get back to the top of the rugged Pac-12. QB Marcus Mariota, of course, is the name most fans will recognize. The dual-threat and Heisman contender will hope for RB Thomas Tyner to become the next in Oregon's succession of speed weapons out of the backfield. The face of the defense will be CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. But a new starter must be found at the opposite corner, and a revamped line must gel quickly.

5. Auburn: The Tigers broke the SEC mold a bit last year riding a high-octane spread rather than a lock-down defense to the coveted league title. Despite the loss of TB Tre Mason, look for more of the same from Auburn with Nick Marshall back at QB. Though Mason is gone from the nation's leading ground offense in 2013, the receiving corps returns most of its production and adds potential star D'haquille Williams from the junior college ranks. The defense will have to get better, but LB Cassanova McKinzy should emerge as a leader.

6. Ohio State: A win away from playing for the BCS championship, the Buckeyes instead settled for an Orange Bowl date with Clemson. The next step to the inaugural playoff is in reach if the defense lives up to its billing and if QB Braxton Miller can stay healthy. Miller's durability will be of utmost importance this year since his line and his ball handlers will be short on experience and Kenny Guiton, who backed him up capably, is gone. The D-line will be formidable indeed with DT Michael Bennett anchoring the inside. DEs Joey Bosa and Noah Spence provide strength on the edges, though the latter will miss the first two games completing a league-imposed suspension.

USATODAY

Amway Fan Poll

7. UCLA: After nearly playing for the Pac-12 title a year ago, the Bruins want to finish the job in 2014. QB Brett Hundley hopes to do just that, and he'll have most of his top ball handlers back with him, including WR Devin Fuller and TB Jordon James. LBs Eric Kendricks and Myles Jack will be the primary stoppers on a defense that needs to develop a pass rush.

8. Michigan State: The Spartans ruined Ohio State's championship dreams in 2013 and look to repeat in the expanded Big Ten. Their Week 2 trip to Oregon provides a great matchup on the early schedule as well as something of a dress rehearsal for the Buckeyes. QB Conner Cook steadied the offense last year, and he regains the services of TB Jeremy Langford and WR Tony Lippett. The MSU pass defense should be a strength with DEs Shilique Calhoun and Marcus Rush bringing the heat and CB Trae Waynes and FS Kurtis Drummond manning the secondary.

9. South Carolina: If the Gamecocks can successfully negotiate a front-loaded schedule, they should live up to their status as projected SEC East favorites. With Connor Shaw gone, Dylan Thompson takes over at QB. In the backfield with him will be talented TB Mike Davis, and WRs Damiere Byrd and Shaq Roland figure to be his main targets. All-everything DE Jadeveon Clowney will be missed, of course, as will DT Kelcy Quarles. Much will be expected of Sharrod Golightly to lead a deep but inexperienced LB group.

10. Baylor: The high-flying Bears will be ready to light up a Big 12 scoreboard near you once again. Standout WR Tevin Reese took his skills to the next level, but incumbent QB Bryce Petty still has plenty of weapons. Antwan Goodley and Levi Norwood will provide the outside threats, and Shock Linwood could be ready for a breakout year at TB. DE Shawn Oakman and DB Terrence Singleton must make plenty of plays on defense as opponents air it out to keep pace.

USATODAY

Baylor has different take defending Big 12 title

11. Stanford: The bar is set pretty high for the Cardinal now that major bowl berths have become the rule rather than the exception. QB Kevin Hogan returns along with top WRs Ty Montgomery and Devon Cajuste, but eventually the Cardinal would like to establish its identity as a power rushing team. Once a rebuilt line gets some snaps under its belt, Kelsey Young or Barry Sanders Jr. could emerge as Stanford's next star TB. LB A.J. Tarpley will anchor the defense that will also have plenty of new faces.

12. Georgia: The good news for coach Mark Richt and Co. is Todd Gurley has the potential to be the best back in the nation if he can stay on the field. The bad news — that's been a mighty big 'if' for the seemingly snake-bitten Bulldogs, whose 2013 campaign was derailed by injuries and agonizingly close losses. On the plus side, QB Hutson Mason got plenty of live reps and will be ready to lead in critical early tests. Big things are expected from the LB corps, featuring seniors Ramik Wilson and Amarlo Hererra.

13. LSU: Like many of its fellow SEC contenders, the Tigers will be long on talent if a little short on experience. Both ends of the passing game will have a lot of new names on the depth chart. The ground attack is on more solid footing, so TBs Kenny Hilliard and Terrance Magee with the help of a veteran front line will have to carry things as the new quarterback and receivers find their way. The front line could be the strongest position group on the defensive side as well, featuring Jermauria Rasco and Danielle Hunter flanking DT Christian LaCouture.

14: Wisconsin: The Badgers could be in the best position to benefit from the Big Ten's new divisional alignment. Their offensive identity will be established right away, with standout TB Melvin Gordon and capable backup Corey Clement operating behind a physical and battle-tested interior line. Incumbent QB Joel Stave is back, but he'll be challenged by Tanner McEvoy in camp, and breakaway WR Jared Abbrederis is gone. The defensive front also lacks experience, which might not bode well for the opener against LSU.

15. Southern California: The Trojans find themselves in catchup mode in the Pac-12 South as Steve Sarkisian takes over. There are enough pieces in place for a solid foundation. QB Cody Kessler and WR Nelson Agholor figure to be key cogs, but more targets must emerge and a go-to tailback, likely Javorius Allen, needs to step up. The defense might be in even better shape. DE Leonard Williams, LB Hayes Pullard and SS Su'a Cravens provide anchors at each level.

2013 College football countdown | No. 19: USC

16: Clemson: The Tigers' 2013 season had its highlights at the beginning against Georgia and at the conclusion with the Orange Bowl triumph against Ohio State. Clemson must hit the ground running again, and must do it without QB Tajh Boyd, WRs Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant, and TB Roderick McDowell. New signal caller Cole Stoudt is a senior who's been in the system but never started a game. WR Mike Williams could emerge as the new deep threat. There's better news on defense, where DEs Vic Beasley and Corey Crawford and DT Grady Jarrett will create havoc in opposing backfields.

17. Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish begin their loose confederation with the ACC, though their challenging slate retains Big Ten and Pac-12 ties as well. What kind of results they get remain to be seen. QB Everett Golson returns and has WR DaVaris Daniels as a potential game breaker. There's depth if not proven production in the ground game, with Tarean Folston expected to lead the platoon. The defense will be even younger, but sophomore LB Jaylon Smith could become the breakout star.

18. Arizona State: The Sun Devils won the Pac-12 South a year ago and appear to have the pieces in place to do it again. The puzzle begins with QB Taylor Kelly, who can also count on veteran WR Jaelen Strong and TB D.J. Foster to keep the points coming. The biggest questions are on the other side, where numerous newcomers to fall camp might be plugged into starting positions right away. LB D.J. Calhoun was around in the spring and figures to play a prominent role.

19. Mississippi: The SEC West is a mighty rough neighborhood, but the Rebels might be positioned to make some noise in the division just the same. Ole Miss has a luxury most conference opponents don't, an incumbent starting QB, in the person of Bo Wallace. Protecting him figures to be the unit's biggest concern, but if he has time WR Laquon Treadwell could be a downfield playmaker. The brothers Nkemdiche, DT Robert and LB Denzel, are back to anchor the defense.

20. Texas A&M: See above on life in the SEC West. Kevin Sumlin and his staff certainly know how to develop talent, but Expecting the Aggies' offense to perform at the same level following the departure of Johnny Manziel and WR Mike Evans is unrealistic. Or is it? Whether Kenny Hill or Kyle Allen takes the opening snap, there's plenty of talent up front and in the backfield. The defense, particularly the secondary, must shore itself up quickly with that opening date at South Carolina looming.

21. Kansas State: The Wildcats enter the season right where they want to be in the poll. Underestimate Bill Snyder's perennial overachievers at your peril. K-State's bread-and-butter running game will have new ball carriers, and the leader just might be freshman Dalvin Warmack. But QB Jake Waters has the threat of WR Tyler Lockett and a solid line to keep the lanes open. Senior DE Ryan Mueller will be the veteran on a defense with some holes to fill.

22. Nebraska: The Cornhuskers haven't exactly taken their new conference by storm, but they hope to be in the mix in the revamped Big Ten West. RB Ameer Abdullah is an elite talent in the Nebraska I-back tradition, though the formation looks a bit different in the modern era. He'll get help from field-stretching WR Kenny Bell if QB Tommy Armstrong can deliver the deep balls. DE Randy Gregory will anchor a solid front, but the back seven must come together.

23. North Carolina: The Tar Heels aren't in a bad place in the ACC — which is to say they're not in the Atlantic Division where Florida State and Clemson live. As such there opportunity is there to move up, but key spots on both sides must be filled. WR Quinshad Davis could be the breakout start of the offense if either QB Marquise Williams or Mitch Trubisky can excel in the starting role. T.J. Logan paces a deep backfield. The versatile Norkeithus Otis will do a little of everything from the bandit position on the defense.

24. Texas: As one of those programs where good enough isn't quite good enough, the Longhorns' faithful expect a lot from former Louisville mentor Charlie Strong in not very much time. For now, the staff will look to build a better offensive line around QB David Ash and TBs Malcolm Brown and Jonathan Gray. Defensive building blocks include DE Cedric Reed and CB Quandre Diggs.

25. Washington: Chris Petersen's creativity with offensive talent that was his signature at Boise State will be tested immediately in his new gig with the Huskies. QB Keith Price, RB Bishop Sankey, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins — all gone. But the entire interior line is back, and WR Kasen Williams hopes to return to form after an injury-plagued 2013 season. The defense will carry Washington early on, with the likes of DE Hau'oli Kikaha and LB Shaq Thompson making noise.

Auburn vs. Louisville (Sept. 5): With the exception of this game, Auburn's nonconference schedule is atrocious. Matchups against Jacksonville State, San Jose State and Idaho will do nothing for the Tigers' playoff résumé, which is why a win over a respectable ACC team could help separate Auburn down the stretch in what will be a very tight SEC West race. The head-to-head against Alabama will be the deciding factor, but each program has one marquee nonconference game on its schedule.
