This whole BOM issue really is bothering me. What the heck was Intel thinking years ago about what degree of integration they would need in order to be competitive in this market?

It's not just integration. It is quite literally the fact that the teams in charge of the platforms ended up using components that were too expensive/too many of them (think PMICs, for instance).

The integration issue also affects the BoM. If you remember back to Investor Meeting 2012, Intel did have an integrated part on the roadmap called '6331', but this one got the axe about a year ago (i.e. right after CES 2013).

I don't know what the actual problem with bringing these IPs to Intel's process is, unfortunately, but I continue to dig...will let you know if I know anything further.

Oh, by the way...I have heard that Merrifield and Moorefield do suffer from the same kind of BoM problem that Bay Trail does, though I don't know to what extent. I have also heard that Intel's big disadvantage against QCOM/MDTK at this point is that these two's platforms essentially allow handset OEMs to use the platform with NO hassle...turnkey. Intel's platforms require quite a bit of R&D to actually implement, which is why Intel is spending so much on NRE to help people actually use these platforms.
