Fujairah’s VHFL Port.

Hi Ken:

The cows are in Dibba. SUF will be operating at the port some 60 kilometers away. The only connection between the dairy in Dibba and SUF is that both the dairy and SUF’s JV partner in Fujairah (Fujairah Oil Technology, LLC) are subsidiaries of the same parent company, Trans Gulf Petroleum, Co.

SUF’s 40-acre site is at the port. Fujairah’s port was built in 1982. It is now the world’s third largest tanker refueling and bunkering station. Over 40 tankers pass through the port daily.

The port is operated by Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd. (VHFL). VHFL is a joint venture between the Fujairah Government (20%), ENOC subsidiary Horizon Terminals (30%), Vitol (10%), Kuwait’s Independent Petroleum Group IPG (10%) and Royal Vopak, which has a 30 % stake and is responsible for the daily operation and management of the terminal.

VHFL started operating in 1998 in Fujairah with a storage capacity of 500,000 cubic meters and two berths with a capacity of respectively 150,000 and 60,000 dwt. Since then, it increased storage capacity to 1.1 million cubic meters and added one Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility capable of serving vessels up to 175,000 dwt.

The current storage capacity of 1.1 million cubic meters is equivalent to 7 million US barrels (bbl). To get a feel of just how much oil that is, 7 million bbl’s is about one week of production from Alaska’s north slope. 7 million bbl is also 8% of the daily consumption of crude on the entire planet. I don’t suspect that SUF will have any shortage of crude to process at their VHFL port location.

Go to the satellite image of Fujairah at this link:

At the top right corner of the sat image is the VHFL port. The white circles at the top of the image are part of the fuel tank farm. For scale, the ship that you can see in the image is likely a suez-max tanker at about 285 meters long. As you can see, it’s a big harbor.

Dibba is located 60 kilometers beyond the upper (north) edge of the sat image.
