It's my belief volume is lower as the market makers have already loaded up.
They will gradually raise the price when they see fit, perhaps with some news. They will then let hype carry it higher, until it peaks. You will then see the high volume again as they unload while investors are jumping in as to not miss out on any profits.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
