If the docs would release the spread of the birdshot wounds, one could get a good idea of the target range. Guess this will never happen unless there is an inquest (G_d forbid).

hoppy...

Based on a lot of years hunting, I would guess that to get that much penetration at 30 yards from a 28 ga., he would have to be using magnum loads and depleted uranium shot.

Uh...HoppyLad, don't know your source for the information you have about Mr. Whittington's condition but you apparently don't have a very good one. He was NOT shot in the heart....one of the pellets "traveled" to his heart.

Hospital officials said they knew that Whittington had some birdshot near his heart and that there was a chance it could move closer since scar tissue had not had time to harden and hold the pellet in place.

After Whittington developed an irregular heartbeat, doctors performed a cardiac catheterization, in which a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the heart, to diagnose his condition, said Peter Banko, the administrator at the hospital.

The shot was either touching or embedded in the heart muscle near the top chambers, called the atria, officials said. Two things resulted:

_It caused inflammation that pushed on the heart in a way to temporarily block blood flow, what the doctors called a "silent heart attack." This is not a traditional heart attack where an artery is blocked. They said Whittington's arteries, in fact, were healthy.

_It irritated the atria, caused an irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation, which is not immediately life-threatening. But it must be treated because it can spur blood clots to form. Most cases can be corrected with medication.

Mr. Cheney was using 7 1/2 shot from a 28-gauge shotgun. Shotgun pellets are typically made of steel or lead; the pellets in 7 1/2 shot are just under a tenth of an inch in diameter.

Experts say the shots had to be from approx 15ft to have done the damage as reported - not 90ft as originally claimed by Cheney's party, or the revised 30ft now claimed by Cheney's party.

It's unfortunate Cheney's party made the decision to send his friend to a small, local hospital initially and not immediately transport him to Corpus Christi Hospital with more advanced personnel/equipment - guess they were trying to keep the entire episode quiet and a major medical facility like CC would surely have drawn attention.

Don't let the facts disturb your fantasy scenarios. THe shot was under the skin and was transorted via the bloostream to the heart where it got logged

The foaming at the mouth conspiracy scenarios are just too funny, IT was an unfortunate accident and the press release wasn't handled ideally. It's not worthy of a warren commision report. Can't wait to hear Cindy Sheehan chime in with her conspiracy thoughts
