I found Dr. Lowe's presentation on Aluminium wire replacing high voltage copper wiring. He made the presentaion on 18 March 2013 at the Plenary Session of the Applied Electronics Electronics Conference.
He stated that the U.S. must invest $1.5 trillion to provide 200 GW for 300,000 km of power cabling by the year 2030. The needed additions to the U.S. power grid, he claims, will be needed to connect new power sources in the central and western U.S.A. Mainly due to the high-voltage power grid transmissions lines and transformers being older than 30 years.
He also claimed that the nanostructed aluminium cabling will have full scale demontration possible in 3 years and possible full production in 4 to 5 years.
I was wrong, however, in one aspect. He claimed that the nano-structured wire will reduce resistive losses which for present copper transmission line losses is at a6.7% level.
If this all turns out to be true, we can look forward to a super large scale production of nano-structured aluminium sometime in the future.
