Synaptics Shares Rise on Analyst Upgrade
Friday February 3, 1:01 pm ET
Synaptics Shares Climb 5.7 Percent on Hopes of Recapturing Business From Apple Computer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Synaptics Inc., maker of touchpads and scroll wheels used in computers and consumer electronics, jumped in Friday trading after a Wall Street analyst predicted the company could recapture business from iPod maker Apple Computer Inc.

Synaptics shares, which have traded between $15.03 and $41.19 in the past year, jumped $1.59, or 5.7 percent, to $29.46 in morning trading on the Nasdaq after First Albany Capital analyst Joel Wagonfeld upgraded the stock to "Buy" from "Neutral," based on the belief that the company could see as much as $45 million to $64 million in incremental revenue in 2007 from Apple.

"Based on recent checks, we believe the probability of Apple recapture is high and the incremental volume could begin impacting Synaptics' revenue as early as the first half of calendar year 2006," Wagonfeld wrote in a research note. "Specifically, we believe Synaptics could ultimately recapture 30 percent to 50 percent of Apple's iPod units, implying 14 million to 23 million incremental units in fiscal year 2007, based on our Apple model's iPod assumptions."

The analyst also noted, however, that because Apple is unpredictable, and prone to changing plans at the last minute, he isn't incorporating revenue from Apple into his model.

Synaptics' shares have suffered for nearly a year following disclosures that Apple would switch to touchpads by Cypress Semiconductor Corp. or other sources.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect the company to earn, on average, 18 cents per share for the third quarter on $43.8 million in revenue, and 19 cents per share for the fourth quarter on revenue of $45.7 million. For fiscal 2007, analysts forecast revenue of $214.8 million.

In afternoon trading, Synaptics shares were up 80 cents, or 2.9 percent, at $28.67.
