I made all the arrangements ahead of time with plenty of notice and Gary drove me out there. I have no idea what the legal situation is but I am sure not anyone can just show up and walk around and it isn't something you can just drive by and look in. The road ends at the mine site. The Lawrey shaft you can see from a road if you are on the right road. I'm not sure about the 5 miles from Downieville. Gary said it was an hr drive from the mine
