[Those days are over. As Intel moves to 14 and 10nm they will have leadership in density. This was covered extensively on Investor's Day.]

But the cited wafer costs were comparing process nodes of similar density

With Intel you are paying for the privilege of using a process node a
couple of years before anyone else produced in fabs running huge
volumes with mature yields. For a few fabless semicos that advantage
could be transformational to their business.
