I don't know any of these apps first hand, and this lower level I2 is doing better than I had guessed it would in this area.
I was surprised too. And the 1.5 GHz 4 MB I2 is priced under $1k (compared to ~$4k for the 1.6 GHz 9 MB I2) so for some apps IPF even comes out ahead of dualie Opteron in price/performance at the system level.
Maybe one more question: Can I take it these apps are typically multi threaded?
Many of them are but the figures I gave are mostly on a one socket to one socket basis. As the number of MPUs/sockets used increased the IPF systems tested advantage over DC Opteron went up.
