Well ANOTHER POV could be that Intel wanted the stock market to look at Intel long term, not just in quarters, novel :) I think it's a good idea personally. It's like having a quarterly report 8 times a year, not necessary.

I_Banker, I believe you have it right.

Midquarter updates are great when you're doing well. However if earnings are less than spectacular, it only gives Wall Street an excuse to take you down twice a quarter instead of just once.

Aside from the MS you say they lost they had a pretty good quarter, they certainly weren't losing money. Whatever the reason for MS loss (chipsets, AMD), I think that will vacillate one way and then the other until the Intel product line gets back on track. One thing Intel does is wake up occasionally. The lack of focus on X86 was a mistake. Itanium was high end only.

I don't see AMD going to the moon. I see Intel recovering starting in mid-year and it being a heated competition for about a year. I do think Intel will win back some MS this year. That would be a good time to sell AMD. Now is a good time to buy Intel.

As for MQ Updates, there is far too much information given out by Intel with analysts tracking it's every move. I don't think any company can operate in that environment (not even AMD! :)). The simple fact that there's an earnings contest on this board relates to this. The analysts have far more (paid for) information from which they operate. Intel could do well to have many more business units to mask operations. AMD is now in that same limelight. Look at what happened to Qualcomm, big surprise due to many business segments. The CEO didn't even say which ones they were! Intel gets probed every quarter. I've been against these updates for a long time. I'm even against next quarter predictions beyond what the economy is doing. Business is very complex and confusing, especially in the flat world, nothing is strictly controlled anymore.

If things don't improve, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will stop giving forward guidance.

Which will put them on par with AMD
