MediaTek to invest over US$1 billion for chipset development in 2014
Cage Chao, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 6 November 2013]

MediaTek is likely to spend over US$1 billion in 2014 for the development of more than 20 new chipset solutions for applications including smartphones, tablets, TVs, wireless devices and DVDs, according to industry sources.

With MediaTek normally allocating up to 20% of its annual sales for R&D expenses, the company's R&D capex for 2013 is likely to reach NT$26 billion compared to revenues of NT$130 billion projected for the year, the sources noted.

MediaTek's R&D capex for 2014 would top over NT$30 billion (US$1.02 billion) as the company's revenues in the coming year are projected to grow 15-25% to NT$149.5-162.5 billion, the sources calculated.

MediaTek is expected to release at least six new processors for smartphone applications in 2014, including two 8-core CPUs, two quad-core CPUs and dual- and single-core models, the sources noted.

There will also be more than six new CPUs for high-end, mid-range and entry-level tablets in 2014, the sources added.
