American International Group Inc. /quotes/zigman/557836/delayed /quotes/nls/aig AIG -5.23%said Thursday its third-quarter insurance operating income was up 38% to $2.2 billion, compared to $1.61 billion a year earlier.

Net income was up 17% to $2.2 billion or $1.46 per share, from $1.9 billion, or $1.13 per share. Net premiums written fell 1% to $8.66 billion from $8.71 billion in the year-ago period.

The results exceeded analyst expectations but revenue was weak.
