King Erik, I do not think it is a question in this highly materialistic U.S. consumer society. Bigger, Better, Faster, ... we gotta have it! IMHO it comes down to this:

"The economic and business model are of course a critical factor. To this point, Wilson argued that "it's not a question of 'Can I afford to broadcast Ultra HD?' In every market, someone will do it. Then it becomes a question of, Can you afford not to?"Competition and growth are the name of the business game, if you are not growing and crushing the competition you will lose.

Hey Eric, I read a little of the article. The big question is simple. Will the public want UHD?

Absolutely. I was at the SD zoo last week and they had HD displays showing off attractions and animals and you can easily see there could be a better picture quality.

Second. You go over to a friends house for a party and see their UHD TV and get amazed by the quality. Word will spread fast once the public realizes how inexpensive the Seiki TVS are.

Third. There is a reason the iPhone 4 was such a huge hit. That technology was called the retina display.

Fourth. We all want the latest and greatest technology if its priced right. The reason 3D didn't take off was because it was inconvenient to where glasses.

Fifth. 4K will bring glassless 3D to the living room. This will be a huge hit if you ask me.

That's my reasons for now. Ill post more if I think of any major key points.

Hey Erik,

You probably already did, but you should definitely shoot D. Foley an email regarding this article. He is very cool about getting back to people.

Erik, At first blush this idea that HD ca 4K
is synonymous to "very good vs very good" is
ABSOLUTELY ABSURD to me. It calls into question
the CHARACTER of the person/information & really
if HE EVEN saw a 4K Panel in his life.

The 4K TV Panels I have seen are ASTOUNDING...
the Seiki 4K TV Panel is easily a SIGNIFICANT
improvment over HD.

So much so IN FACT, that MY EXPERIENCE was more
like this:
http://gizmodo.com/5994765/seiki-50+inch-4k-tv-eyes+on-how-the-hell-is-a-tv-this-beautiful-so-cheap

Granted there is other, perhaps MORE SALIENT points
I need to read through & reply, but how ANYONE WHO HAS
seen a quality 4K TV panel essentially say, "there is
no difference" is just HOGWASH to me & COMPLETELY
UNDERMINES their credibility (makes me wonder what
their AGENDA is as well..., but that is MY 4K experience so)

Offensive Excerpt:

How about this statement:?

Ericsson's Giles Wilson described a move to Ultra HD programming as "moving from viewing it to experiencing it." But U.S.-based consultant Mark Schubin argues that there isn't enough of a difference between HD and 4K, saying the discussion is about "very good versus very good."

Mark Schubin has me dumbfounded. I'd agree with Giles Wilson's
pov much more readily, that is CLOSER TO MY EXPERIENCE tbh.

I agree with Mini Me. 3D was not successful due to the inconvenience of having to wearing glasses and getting dizzy watching hours on end. They tried it a long time ago and it failed and it failed again. 4k is the real deal since more and more people are buying bigger flat panels where the 4k resolution would definitely get rid of the pixelation. In addition people are wanting resolution similar to the retina display.

TV networks will need to jump in to 4K at some point. As always it's about the mighty dollar!
“We have no interest into doing 4K [four times the resolution of today’s HD] telecasts or moving 4K signals to living rooms,” the exec said Monday at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers conference at Loews Hollywood Hotel. “We spent millions going to HD and never got an extra dime from advertisers. … It seems today [4K broadcasting] is a monumental task with not a lot of return.”

Will be a marathon, not a sprint. content is king. What good is having a beautiful 4K screen if you can't enjoy perfect quality picture?
