Dan, Nice, thoughtful reply- thanks for taking the time, and I will check out the ETFs. When looking at the funds, I placed a minimum $2K on the search to narrow it down.
Your statement about entering slowly makes sense, as I see smallcaps going strong til April, then large caps brining up the rear.

I have not really thought about the tax angle, I'll pay my fair share (he,he).

Thanks for your list, I'll look at them.

Folks thanks for your help. Here is that funds/etf that I bought:

BRSIX (smallcap)
CGRWX (Large cap)
LCVAX (Bond/balanced)
GOLDX (gold)
TGLDX (metals/golds)
PHRAX (real estate)
EFA (International)

I've taken about half a position in each area, and kept about 33% in cash for now.

The situation in Japan, plus weak INTEL/Yahoo reports makes it tougher to call mid-long term trend. Going to look harder at the ETF plays.
