Senator: House Republicans ‘Hate Government,’ ‘Crashing the Economy’ is ‘Success’ for Them

Independent senator Angus King appeared on MSNBC’s Up Saturday morning to preview the final few days of the government funding battle in Washington. Steve Kornacki asked what he expects to come out of the House. King wasn’t exactly optimistic about how it would turn out.

King slammed the “Hastert Rule” House Republicans have to never bring a bill to the floor unless a majority of them plan on voting for it, taking that to mean “120 people are holding the United States hostage.” But it wasn’t just that King got to the very heart of what he believed was Republican thinking on stopping Obamacare at all costs.

“There’s a pernicious inner logic to what these characters are doing. They hate government. They don’t want government to work. They don’t believe government can or should work, and so to them, crashing the economy and crashing the government is a kind of weird success, and it’s very hard to reach agreement with people who don’t reach a kind of basic appreciation of the institution. This is dangerous. We’ve never been here before.”
He also took a swipe at the GOP’s demands for raising the debt ceiling, saying they’re asking for everything short of a “statue of Ayn Rand.”
