ifitlooks, this was new information from the SHM, here's a link to one post that I know discussed it after the SHM, there may be more as well.
(It's in the header under attendee recaps and was discussed after the meeting, here on the board.)

NEOM chose to fix the problem before wide release; ScanBuy released their software with the problem; an add-on macro lens attachment is needed for their software to have a chance of working. (Info on ScanBuy's site documents this requirement - without it their software WON'T work.)

NEOM has been working with the lens OEMs about the specs needed. However, in addition, NEOM has been reverse-engineering the Paperclick software to bypass the current lens limitations. The software has been/is almost completed modified to control the auto focus feature of the camera phone lens so that it is capable of reading 1D barcodes. (This is big IMO) Looks like this issue is nearly resolved.

Comment was made that it is a "big mistake" by ScanBuy to have launched their product with these problems (ie lens focusing.) Recall from the scanbuy site that their product does NOT work without a special lens attachment.
