That is a philosphical debate that has plenty of room for leeway...
Personally, I think there is a line between a purely animal form and physical embodiment and the point where mind or "soul" enters the picture. Many say with the drawing of the first independent breath.
I do not think we have that nailed down yet.
It's is instinctual not to want the physical body to die. No creature wishes to die unprovoked by circumstances. That is built right into us.
However, need doesn't always accomodate this.
As I said I believe it is a pact between a woman and her creation.
