Duke..Not everyone could afford home computers or calculators or TVs when they first came out...the fact Sony is turning a profit on QD TVs isn't lost on the competitors they will all want a piece of the action... With scale comes the reduction in pricing to afford the average guy the ability to purchase a QD TV...SS will mass produce qd well under the competition to own the market and make all QD products more affordable for the masses.I remember not long ago some of my customers paying 7-10k for plasma TVs when they furnished their homes, sane TV for well under 1k now...I was in at Future shop and Best Buy and sales have been very good according to both for the Sony TV.

Morning Duke...other than a lot of ongoing research in that sector by notable concerns & a few oddball QDLED novelty lighting arrangements that can't be taken very seriously , the only company I know of (at the moment) that has QDLED lighting for sale of any consequence is Mole-Richardson...in their new QDLED Fresnels.
Intended as professional studio lighting in the arts , these units appear to be fairly impressive, expensive & for-real but aren't intended for mass consumption...but it's good to see QDLED coming into its' own just the same:

...and here's a video review of this tech from NAB2013: http://blog.adoramarentals.com/nabshow-wrap-up-lighting/
**To your 2nd question; your guess is as good as mine but from what I can tell, the R&D market is in fullswing w/ the bashful/cautious commercial market still in the background testing the waters for the mostpart...wish I knew more ;)
