Without knowing what JJ told Discovery, versus what Discovery reported, there is no way anyone can say where the information disconnect occurred.

Given that Discovery is getting flack for a variety of specious "documentaries" (e.g. Moonshiners, Megalodon, Mermaids, etc.), I don't put anything past Discovery in order sell a story for ratings. Certainly they might try to exaggerate anything to make a handful of silly miners digging in the desert sand of Chile more interesting than it actually was.
