Chipguy, your theory may work in a vacuum, but I don't think AMD will be competitive against Intel with anything less than 2GHz. The notion that they have 2.5GHz in their back pocket, which is frequently propagated by AMD hopefuls, does not hold any water in a competitive environment. The same argument was used to explain AMD's delay of Thoroughbred. People actually argued that AMD had a .13u processor, but "they didn't need it", since their .18u processors were selling so well. We all know that was bullcrap.
AMD has been hyping Opteron as a revolutionary leap in performance for the past couple years. The last thing they would want is to take the wind from their sails by offering a mediocre version of the chip at launch. 1.8GHz is mediocre if they have 2.5GHz right now.
