Before Jesus' time on this earth, God looked at the hearts of people to determine their faith in God (whether they were true believers or not).
After Jesus' time, God looks at whether or not people believed and put their faith in Jesus.
Jesus said He is "the way, the truth, and the life" and that "no one comes to the Father but through Him".
That is just God's way. His ways are not our ways and His ways are higher than our ways. Some would say that isn't fair, intolerant, etc. But that is God's way.
