Yes, AFT has been funded over $1,000.000.00 in awards to mitigate the wear issues associated with JP-8 in non aircraft vehicles. Phase I was completed and the report written which prompted the Army to fund Phase II with over $700,000.00 in more research awards. That is the top end amount for Phase II awards...

As I have stated, SBIR can provide engineering and scientific support in addition to monitary funds for research that shows a high likelihood of commercialization..what they refer to as "High Reward".

This could be seen as the National Science Foundation involovement some moths ago when AFT was one of only two to receive this award of 100 that applied. Argonne National Labs also got involved with AFT..more support.

Interesting that last years award winner for innovations from Argonne Labs assisted products was a diamond based coating used to reduce wear on surfaces.

My posts archived on my profile have all the SBIR technicals from thier various publications if anyone wishes to read them.

I don't know if AFT's pump and fuel injector that they are designing for the SBIR Army contract is applicable to the M1 tank, which uses a Honeywell gas turbine engine, not a diesel. It can run on JP-8 fuel, put would likely need a different pump/fuel injector system.

(scroll down to section #4)

Diesel's are more fuel efficient/less maintaince, and hindsight thinking is the Army should have gone with a diesel for the M1.
I believe AFT's are designed for medium to heavy duty diesel engines, like Hummer's, supply and fuel trucks, etc. that will use the new Navistar motors. But that would still mean thousands of Army vehicles to be fitted with the new pumps/fuel injectors.
