GMO has been installed as the big boogeyman. I think that each situation has to be examined individually. for oranges, one could insert a gene from an organism distasteful to the insect vector of the disease and that would get past this crisis. since orange trees do not readily reproduce on their own, if we studied the result and didn't like it, we could replace them.

after all, it is not much different than the old method, bombarding seeds with radiation and then growing the trees until one with favorable characteristics occurred.

Now add chemical salesmen to the mix, and monsanto would probably create an orange that would have to be sprayed with their special chemicals to avoid the disease, and you could only buy an orange tree from them, with unresearched effects... and you would have an analog to american corn.
