You're right, so much anger aimed at Stoj, yet the signs and history were there so plainly long before Stoj ever showed up. This is just one of dozens (hundreds?) of desert dirt scams that are on-going.
Given that Stoj was having to work with a property with very little gold to begin with, what could he have done differently?
