Some of us, me included, had expectation of the pump being used in Volvo etc. It was speculative and never really quite fit with some good comments from board DD'ers.. the most telling was (attribution please) "Jim decided not to patent the earlier pump" as it turns out you can now find a few people who do make it. If you read the SBIR guidance.. that's the key, and the genius behind his decision..
They can award SOLE SOURCE rights to the firm they invested all of that research money into..say..hmmm AFT? No patents needed and (Ill reread. i think that stretches out up to 10 years.
If this goes to phase III (and the Argonne and National Science foundation involvment is, for me, the smoking gun), then Jim has no worries about China, Korea, anyone usurping the product. Its all AFT. Sole Source Supplier.
Even if they (and they can) license this product to Jim for manufacture elsewhere.. that's a beautiful thing..Let's all hope.
