That's true in situations where there is naturally occurring gold, like in a river or rock formation (placer and disseminated gold, respectively).

In the case of sunken treasure, there will be no naturally occurring minerals, like magnetite.

As far as a ferrous box or enclosure is concerned, I suspect the chance of it surviving after 250 years in salt water is somewhat slim.
