Do you remember what the first hours/days/weeks were like when D3 came out? A lot of paying customers had a lot of trouble even connecting to the game.

I'm not saying you're wrong. There will always be sheeple willing to fork over their cash to play a game that restricts how they can play it and what they can do with it when they're done with it.
But if you've been paying attention to E3, then you know things are looking a lot rosier for Sony than MS right now due to public opinion on how they want to play their video games. I'd hate to see the new XBOX sales undermined because MS failed to see the writing on the wall. People will only put up with so much, and if someone else offers a console with games that are just as fun, but cheaper and less restrictive, watch out...
