That would entirely depend on your trading strategy.

For example a volume gain in recent days would be an indication that's something is up with that stock. That has to be followed with some DD of course.

Yahoo Finance is a good free stock screener. There are many others also.

Volume vs Float size is an indication of how fast that stock can move.

However, I have noticed that the stock screeners miss out OTC tickers quite often. They are pretty good in searching the NYSE, NASDAQ, etc. There are some good penny stocks on the big boards too that rise from the ashes upon good news / financials / etc . . easier to get filled there.

TheWatcher, looks like Poster newtrader answered your question already. Also, Key things to watch for is momentum, the # of shares in the OS and what the spread is between the Bid/Ask.
