#23135 RE: Tenchu #23132

Next year for AMD?
I think AMD has been pretty clear what they need and will do next year. They will "upgrade" to DDR2, which will help dual core quite a bit, but will not do much for single core products. They will release a dual core laptop chip. They will release pacifica (virtualization) catching up with Intel, and they will release presidio (security) catching up with Intel. They need to get 65nm working and shipping.
I think the only open question is how much speed they will add to the products, with most likely scenario being somewhere just north of 3Ghz.

Re: You still haven't told me how AMD is going to do this

A combination of SiGe implantation improve performance and reduce transistor size, the move to 65nm to reduce wire lengths (doesn't help much, but it's something) and the steady incremental improvements AMD gains from APC.

The good news for you is that if AMD fails to improve, Intel says it will catch up and maybe even pass them in 2008:
The problem with CSI is that Intel is beating the current implementation with a product that is set for 2008, maybe, if the stars align right and Venus is in Uranus. I believe the tech is ready, but the first two lead off vehicles, Tukwila the elder and Whitefield were canned long ago, and the current standard bearer isn't looking like it will wow people either should it survive the events of mid-2006.

So, if AMD sits completely still, and Intel actually executes, then CSI will probably beat it. The new HT is set to come out in Q2, and there is at least one other upgrade planned for 2007, one that should match most if not all of CSI's RAS features. AMD is not sitting still.
