Is he using matched grip or traditional? I played matched most of my life but switched to traditional a couple of years ago. It was like I was learning to play all over again, but I'm happier with my sound now. I have broader dynamic range playing this way and far greater control over the subtle nuances of the band's rhythm section.
Unless the bass player goes out of his mind and starts thumping all over my masterfully-woven rhythmic tapestries.
